The 2017 Isle of Man TT marks 60 years since Avon Tyres set the first ever 100mph lap.
Smashing the record was the legendary Scot Bob McIntyre, running a four cylinder Gilera on Avon’s Speedmaster race tyres. On his first lap of the historic circuit during the 1957 Senior 500cc race, McIntyre set a 99.9mph lap from a standing start, but it was on his second lap where he hit the 100mph milestone with an accurate reading of 101.03mph.
If you’re heading to the TT this year, you’ll be able to see a replica of the record breaking Gilera, complete with Speedmaster GP tyres.
Avon Tyres will be at the 2017 Isle of Man TT, providing support to both their solo and their sidecar racers. French rider Timothee Monot will be using Avon’s Xtreme racing rubber in his Supertwin, Superstock 600 and TT Zero assault.
