It was a difficult first weekend of the series for the 2016  DTM Series champion Marco Wittmann who could only go as well as 10th in the first race before struggling in the tricky conditions for qualifying ahead of the second race.

“That was a mega race. I am extremely happy with third place. Having started from 17th on the grid, it feels like a win. I had a fantastic opening lap, and I made up more places after the restart.”

Starting from 17th on the grid, Wittmann made up seven places off of the line to find himself in 10th place before the safety car came out.

You can relive Wittmann’s first lap as well as his entire race onboard with the German.

After the restart Wittmann made up more positions as the rain hit.

Finding the perfect moment to switch to the wet tyres was important, especially after a number of drivers had chosen to serve their mandatory before the rain came meaning they would have to come into the pits once again.

“When it started to rain, it was incredibly difficult to decide when to switch to wet-weather tyres. I think I ultimately made the right decision. The strategy worked out perfectly.”

Heading to Lausitzring, Wittmann sits sixth in the championship with 16 points to his name.
