Max Chilton: “The more laps you do the more you learn”

Max Chilton feels that he has a good car for race day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Sunday after topping the final full day of practice on Monday.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver had a productive session, completing 108 laps across the three-and-a-half hour session, and although he set the fastest lap of the day at 228.592mph, that was with the benefit a tow, and he feels that the clear air run was more indicative of having a good car and as a result he has confidence heading into the 500-mile race.

Chilton feels that no one will be particularly happy with the performance of their car on Monday, especially after coming off the back of two days of qualifying in low-trim, but getting the laps in on Monday was important to learn how his #8 Honda-powered Dallara handled around the 2.5-mile oval with slightly higher downforce levels.

“I was in the car today for the whole session outside of a short 10-minute window,” said Chilton. “We just wanted to get the laps in today.

“I don’t think anyone is particularly happy with their car, but that’s why I just wanted to get the laps in because the more laps you do the more you learn. We ended up being at the top of the timesheet, which doesn’t really mean anything because I got a pretty nice tow.

“There was one run where I was in completely clean air and Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing just gave me a great car where I was pretty decent. It’s all boding well for the race.”
