Renault Sport Formula 1 Team driver Nico Hulkenberg was pleased to follow-up his strong results at the last two rounds of the season, with a further solid performance at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The German came home in sixth place, to move the Enstone based squad into seventh position in the constructor’s standings, and within just four points of close rivals Williams Martini Racing.

Hulkenberg was able to maintain a strong pace throughout the race, and snuck ahead of Sauber F1 Team driver Pascal Wehrlein, when the team completed a super-fast second pit stop to get him out ahead of the German, despite Wehrlein entering the pits before him.

“P6 is a great result for us and very rewarding too. It’s been our lucky day with some of the top cars out at the start, but also later on in the race too, so we clearly benefited from that.

“At the same time, we were there at every opportunity to do a good job and the guys did a great second pit stop to enable us to pass the Sauber.”

It has been a strong start to the season for Renault; with progress clearly being made at every race, as Hulkenberg’s result across the last five rounds at least show.

The German has a strong belief that the team will achieve great things in the future, but knows that step up in performance is not just going to happen overnight.

“I feel very comfortable in the car but we still have work ahead of us to catch up our closest competitors.”
