Raoul Hyman, making his EuroFormula Open debut this weekend at the Hungaroring for Campos Racing, paced the field during Friday’s practice sessions.
The South African, who’s primary focus this year is the GP3 Series with the same outfit, turned the best lap of the day during the morning session, with his 1:37.023s enough to beat the driver he replaced in the #1 Campos seat, Petru Florescu.
Florescu has switched over to Fortec Motorsports for the remainder of the season after a low-key opening few races, but the Romanian finished 0.237 seconds down on Hyman, while Harrison Scott, the winner of five of the first six rounds of the season, ended third fastest for RP Motorsport.
Jannes Fittje, who secured a maiden podium finish last time out at Paul Ricard, ended the opening session in fourth, while Teo Martin Motorsport’s Eliseo Martinez Merono completed the top five, 1.022 seconds down on Hyman.
The afternoon session saw Scott lead the way with a best time of 1:37.129s, while Hyman continued to show good form by getting within 0.040 seconds of the championship leader.
Martinez improved his time to finish third ahead of Drivex School’s Christian Hahn, while Matheus Iorio ended up fifth for Campos Racing as the top fifteen drivers were separated by just 0.715 seconds.
Qualifying for the opening race takes place on Saturday morning.
