Keith Amor - Photo Credit: Honda TT Legends

Keith Amor has announced his retirement from racing after injuries sustained over the last 12 months have failed to heal sufficiently. The Scotsman raced in the World Endurance Championship for Honda TT Legends last year as well competing at the Isle of Man TT, where he finished second overall in the TT Championship.

Amor suffered two crashes during the TT event which ultimately started the road to retirement. The first came at Quarterbridge during practice and another followed in the opening Supersport race, causing damage to Amor’s shoulder. He returned to race at the Ulster Grand Prix but another crash aggravated the injury.

Although he may still be fit enough to ride motorcycles, Amor has decided to call it a day, feeling he wouldn’t be able to do himself justice unless he was 100% fit.

“My decision has been a hard one and one I have agonised over for the last few months. I had major surgery to both shoulders in November with the right having to be totally reconstructed and the ligaments tightened in the left as well. I had a MRI scan today to check if the ops have been successful but the doc said it hadn’t healed and I would need further surgery. So that’s me done with racing. I was injured all of last year and I am not going to ride in that condition again. I am in racing to win and I want to be competitive, not just be out there to make up the numbers”

“I will be 40 this year and I have done a lot in racing in a short time. “I started my career in 2001 at Knock hill with an orange bib at a Kirkcaldy club meeting as a novice and ended it 10 years later as a member of Honda Europe’s TT Legends team. I didn’t race any roads at all until 2005 and I only went full-time in 2007. A lot of hard work went into getting here for it all to go wrong like this but everything changed with a simple twist of fate.”

Paul Philips, TT and Motorsport Manager at the Isle of Man Government, has paid tribute to Amor and praised his achievements in a relatively short space of time.

“Despite his late start to TT Racing Keith has had a great career. People often forget that he only began racing on the Mountain Course in 2007 and was a whisker away from Steve Plater as fastest newcomer lap that year. He finished on the podium in his second year and went on to claim at least one podium a year every year since. He quickly established himself as one of the leading TT riders and he was a great teammate to John McGuinness last year. I have no doubt that with had he continued to race at the TT fully fit, he would have won races and he is a popular figure who will always be welcome on the Isle of Man.”

Guy Martin - Photo Credit: Isle of Man TT

Guy Martin will go in search of his first Isle of Man TT victory with Tyco Suzuki after committing for a second successive campaign with the TAS squad. The popular Lincolnshire man claimed four podium finishes at last year’s event and will join Conor Cummins on a pair of GSX-R Suzukis.

Martin will also race in the North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix and feels the team has everything in place to challenge for victories.

“It’s taken a while, but it was always on the cards. I’m happy to be back with the team for a second year and I love the new Tyco Suzuki colours. Great job. I couldn’t knock last year to be honest; the only thing we didn’t do was win a TT, but hopefully we’ll put that right in June. That’s the box we want to tick. The North West and Ulster are great events but it’s a TT win I really want. The team is good enough, the bikes are good enough and I believe the rider is good enough, so it’s time to go out and bloody win one.”

Tyco Suzuki team manager Philip Neill is delighted to have completed the signing of the 30 year old and feels comfortable that his rider line-up has what it takes to be successful on the roads this year.

I think we both knew that it was going to happen. We made a verbal agreement to each other last August at the Ulster Grand Prix, but all the speculation has brought great publicity for our sponsors, the team and Suzuki, which is great. But I suppose when Guy gets out of bed these days he gets media coverage.”

“He’s a hard man to pin down with such a busy schedule, but Guy proved last year that he has all the ingredients required to go all out for that TT win in June. It’s eluded him so far, but we’ll go all out together to make it happen.”

“He’s not just the most popular rider in the UK these days, but also very popular outside the sport, which is good for motorcycling in general. Everyone at TAS, Suzuki, Tyco and existing sponsors like Ian Glen from Beacon are delighted to see him stay for a second year. And with Conor on-board and now Guy I think we have strong team looking ahead to the three international meetings.”

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Manager with the Isle of Man Government, expects Tyco Suzuki to be one of the most popular squads at this year’s event.

“It’s always exciting for the fans, and the organisers, to see strong riders sign up for the leading teams and the Tyco Suzuki outfit will attract huge interest with both of their riders. Although neither has yet won a TT Race they both have gone very close and with a bit of luck either could already have stood on the top step on the TT podium. They’ll both have plenty of support at this year’s event and will definitely be one of the teams to beat.”

Jeremy McWilliams will race in this year’s Relentless International North West 200 after signing a deal with Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki squad. The 47 year old started 177 Grands Prix during his career and took a victory in the 250cc class along the way.

And now, the Northern Irishman will head to Coleraine for the road racing spectacular in May, where he’ll compete in the Supertwin race, and admits he will be fulfilling a lifelong ambition.

“The North West 200 is renowned in the world of motor sport, I’ve been attending it as a fan since I was a teenager and I’m really looking forward to experiencing it at first hand. The North West 200 has a unique atmosphere and exceptional racing. I’m hoping that I can be a competitive newcomer, I’ve some great competition just from my team mates! It would be a fairytale to win the new Supertwin race but I have to be realistic. I’m really happy with my bike and it’s been great to work with Ryan Farquhar who is no stranger to winning at the North West 200.”

Team Owner Ryan Farquhar believes the signing of McWilliams gives him the perfect team to challenge for victory this year.

“Having Jeremy make his North West 200 debut on one of my bikes is a fairytale for me. I’ve been involved in the Supertwin class from ‘day one’ and promoted it as best I can. It’s a perfect bike for both newcomers and experienced riders and I don’t think I could have a better team with Jeremy and newcomer Jamie Hamilton.”

Farquhar admits that McWilliams wasn’t his initial choice but an injury to one of his riders forced him to make alternative arrangements.

“The whole idea came about when I was invited to an international road racing event at Philip Island (Australia) last February. Lee Gourley was meant to be my team mate but was injured so I asked Jeremy to step in. He agreed, we had a great time and got on really well. It was in Australia when I first said to Jeremy about riding on one of my Supertwins and he was willing. The rest, as they say, is history! Jeremy then rode at the Sunflower and finished first and third and was keen to do it again. Thankfully, I secured sponsors which has made our North West 200 dream a reality. We’re really looking forward to it.”

North West 200 technical director Mervyn Whyte MBE is thrilled with the news and expects one of the strongest fields in the event’s history.

“Jeremy McWilliams is nothing short of a living legend in motorsport and no doubt our fans will be excited at the prospect of watching him race at the Relentless International North West 200. The Supertwin class is a new race for the North West 200 this year and we are pleased to be introducing it with such a high calibre line-up.”

Tyco Suzuki have confirmed Conor Cummins as the first signing for their 2012 road racing squad

Conor Cummins - Photo Credit: Suzuki Racing

Tyco Suzuki have confirmed Conor Cummins as the first signing for their 2012 road racing squad. The TAS Racing team will have a full programme in 2012 with Cummins set to compete in the North West 200, Ulster Grand Prix and his home event, the Isle of Man TT.

After a horrendous crash on the mountain course two years ago, Cummins feels he is starting to return to full fitness and is relishing the prospect of riding for such an experienced team.

“This is the ride I’ve been wanting for three or four years. I’m thrilled to have been given the chance to now ride for a factory-supported team in Tyco Suzuki and to be working with the boys at TAS Racing. I’ve been training hard with gym sessions and out on the pushbike and mountain bike over the winter, so I’m relishing the thought of getting aboard the team’s GSX-R1000 Superbike in testing. I’d say I’m not far off being as fit as I ever was and having been over to the workshop to meet the boys in Northern Ireland and have a look at my bikes – April can’t come quick enough to get racing!”

Team Manager Philip Neill is delighted to have completed the signing and sees him as the ideal rider for his road racing outfit.

“After months of speculation and negotiations it’s great to finally welcome Conor Cummins to our team for the 2012 international road racing season. It’s fair to say there has been a little bit of pressure to return to a two-rider team on the roads – so once we’d reached that decision, Conor really was the obvious choice. As a person I’ve always been hugely impressed with Conor and his riding skills were evident to all after those blistering lap speeds at the 2010 TT.

“However, probably more impressive is the determination he has shown in his comeback from injury, and for me, that was more than enough to justify a factory-supported ride with us here at Tyco Suzuki. I’ll be looking forward to working with Conor both on and off the track this season, as he has the attitude and personality I was really looking for in a rider.”

Team Owner Hector Neill already has his eyes on the 2012 Isle of Man TT races and hopes the GSX-R1000 can power Cummins to home glory.

“It’s no secret the Isle of Man TT is the highlight of the racing season for me, and with that in mind, it was important to have a two-rider line-up. It’s also widely known that my number one desire in racing is to again win the Senior TT trophy. So what better way than to win it with a Manxman on board.”

Steve Mercer will return for a third crack at the Isle of Man TT after signing to race with Millsport Racing Ducati in 2012. The Kent rider made his debut in the road racing spectacular in 2009 and will compete in the Dainese Superbike, PokerStars Senior and Royal London 360 Superstock Races.

“I’m really looking forward to riding the new Ducati 1199 Panigale for Millsport Racing next year and I think it will be a serious machine on both roads and Circuits. 2012 can’t come soon enough”, he commented.

Mercer will begin testing in March ahead of the International Road Race season and will also contest the early rounds of the National Superstock Championship. Team Boss Patrick Murray can’t wait to get started and is delighted with his new signing,

“Millsport Racing Ducati are delighted to have Steve on board our 1199 Panigale’s for the 2012 season. Now we are looking forward to getting on the track as early as possible in the New Year to begin a testing programme in preparation for the season ahead.”

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Development Manager at the Isle of Man Government, expects Millsport to put on an impressive display at next year’s TT and is looking forward to seeing them in action.

“Millsport Racing is an excellent team and they are a great fit with Steve Mercer who is one of the most exciting new riders to compete on the Mountain Course in recent years. I’m sure that they will enjoy a successful relationship and we look forward to seeing them on the Isle of Man in 2012.”

The 2012 Isle of Man TT races fuelled by Monster Energy will run from May 28th to June 8th 2012.

The Relentless International North West 200’s chief marshal Cathal Cunning will bring his expertise to next year’s Olympic Games in London after being given a conditional offer to become a Games Maker at the event.

Should he complete the necessary background security checks, Cunning will join around 70,000 volunteers looking to make sure the Games run smoothly. Cathal, from Portstewart, will be part of the London 2012 Transport team and can’t wait to be a part of the year’s biggest sporting extravaganza.

“I’m really excited that I’m set to be part of such a huge sporting spectacular which attracts the cream of athletes from all over the world. A major part of the role in the transport department will be to ensure athletes, coaches or Games officials are in the right place at the right time. Pre-Games training will include swotting up on my knowledge of key transport routes in and around the Olympic Villages and competition venues. We are also expected to work round the clock come rain, hail or shine – so all my North West 200 experience will definitely help!”

“Until I take up my volunteer position I won’t know what teams or athletes I may be chauffeuring, but you never know, I may be accompanying legends such as Jamaican sprinter Hussein Bolt, young diver Tom Daley, South African ‘bladerunner’ Oscar Pistorius or British distance runner Mo Farah! Here’s hoping anyhow!”

North West 200 technical director Mervyn White MBE has welcomed the news and is hopeful Cathal’s experience at the Olympics will benefit the Coleraine road racing event in years to come.

“Myself and the NW200 management team are thrilled that Cathal’s experience has been recognised and I’m sure that he will bring back new knowledge and ideas which will help enhance the North West 200 in 2013. Working at the Olympic Games is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we’re very proud that our North West chief marshal will be among the many volunteers involved at London 2012.”

The legendary MV Agusta name is set to make its competitive return to the Isle of Man TT Races in 2012 with the World Performance Racing team in association with Chorley-based Moto GB.

With 33 TT race wins to its name and a total of 61 podiums between 1952 and 1972 the team will have a lot to live up to.

Neil Haslam, Team Boss, World Performance Racing commented: “World Performance Racing represents a passion for motorcycle racing and the desire to bring MV Agusta, the iconic motorcycle brand with a unique heritage, to the celebrated Isle of Man TT races in 2012. We aim to restore MV Agusta back to winning ways and ensure that the 2012 TT will be another chapter in this great Italian’s brand’s history.”

The iconic brand has been ridden to success by some of the motorcycling’s greatest names including the most successful MV Agusta rider Giacamo Agostini with 10 wins to his name, 6 wins by John Surtees, 5 wins for Carlo Ubbiali, 4 for Mike Hailwood and 3 for Tarquinio Provini. Other race winners include Gary Hocking (2 wins), John Hartle, Bill Lomas, Cecil Sandford and Les Graham

The last high profile appearance for the MV Augusta at the TT was in 2007 which saw the late Martin Finnegan take fourth place in the Superstock TT race lapping at 125.685mph.

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Development Manager, added: “MV Agusta is one of the truly iconic names in the TT’s history and I’m sure many fans will be eager to see the much anticipated return of a factory supported outfit. I’m really pleased that we will see yet another factory backed outfit at next year’s TT and it is further confirmation of the event’s growing strength and appeal.”

Ryan Farquhar is setting his sights on victory in the Royal London 360° Superstock event at next year’s Isle of Man TT after missing last year’s race through injury. The Dungannon rider crashed during practice for last year’s TT and has been using that moment as inspiration as he prepares for the 2012 TT.

“I still have unfinished business in the Superstock class, particularly after last year’s disappointment. I’m looking forward to next year’s races and will be looking to build on my 2010 performance.”

Farquhar was speaking on the day Royal London 360° signed a three-year deal to sponsor the Superstock class, making them the TT’s longest existing sponsor and Farquhar has welcomed the news.

“I am delighted to see a Manx company making such a valued contribution to the success of the TT and I am looking forward to working with Royal London 360° again over the next three years, and hopefully reaching the top step of the podium once more in 2012!”

Finance and Commercial Director Mike Crellin is delighted to be continuing the company’s association with the TT and adds that the event is an integral part of their yearly schedule.

“Our sponsorship of the Royal London 360° Superstock TT race is a partnership which has worked both commercially and locally for us since 2002, and we are really excited to be continuing our sponsorship of the event for another three years.”

“It is vital for us that we continue to invest in our Manx roots yet promote the Island internationally, and our sponsorship of the Royal London 360° Superstock TT race allows us to do this. It makes such a difference to our relationships with our key stakeholders that we are able to bring them to the Isle of Man, spend time with them and enjoy the TT, and we look forward to this continuing!”

Ryan Farquhar & Jamie Hamilton - Photo Credit: Isle of Man TT

Former National Superstock 600 champion Jamie Hamilton will make his debut in the Isle of Man TT races next year after extending his stay with Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki team.

The 20 year old joined the team prior to the Ulster Grand Prix meeting where he finished fourth in each of the Supertwins races before impressing again in the Phil Mellor Trophy SuperTwin races in Scarborough. Hamilton then closed the year with a victory at the Sunflower Trophy meeting and will now take part in a full season of road racing in 2012.

The Ballymena rider will participate in the Superbike, Superstock and Senior races, as well as the inaugural Supertwins TT, and is already beginning his preparations for the big event.

“I’m really enjoying road racing and can’t wait to make my TT career. I couldn’t have a better mentor than Ryan and I’m going to be working really hard during the close season to make sure that I’m in the best shape to tackle the course. I’ve already been over to the Isle of Man a few times to look at the course and I’m going to spend large chunks of the winter with Milky Quayle and Johnny Barton learning the course.”

Team Owner Ryan Farquhar has spoken of the impression Hamilton made when he joined the team and expects a strong performance in the 2012 Isle of Man TT.

“I really like Jamie’s attitude to racing and right from the moment he first rode for me at the Ulster GP, he’s been a pleasure to work with. He wants to go road racing and he’s not scared of getting stuck in and getting his hands dirty. He’s more than prepared to put the hard yards in and gives nothing other than 100%. I like that attribute in someone and, with a mature head on his shoulders, I’m sure he’ll put in a really solid debut at the TT. There’ll be no pressure on him so he can just go out, learn the course and enjoy himself.”

Michael Rutter now stands alone as the most successful rider in the history of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix after taking his seventh win in the prestigious street race. The 39 year old previously shared the record with Ron Haslam but a battling performance on Sunday ensured his place in history.

The RidersMotorcycles.com man didn’t have it all his own way early on with Ian Hutchinson storming into the lead from third on the grid while Rutter disputed second with John McGuinness and Riders teammate Martin Jessopp.

Rutter eventually broke free and took the lead at Lisboa on lap four before stretching his lead. After his history-making success, Rutter paid tribute to the Pirelli tyres which carried him to victory.

“I’m over the moon to get this seventh win and I’ve got to say the tyres were absolutely faultless throughout the race with consistent grip and great stability.”

Jessopp managed to get the better of Hutchinson for second and echoed the comments of his teammate, saying that the tyres “were mint from lap one, no slides and they stayed consistent throughout with great handling stability.”

Hutchinson’s third place was particularly impressive given his injury turmoil over the last 12 months, finishing just 6.8 seconds off the lead. Jeremy Toye was a lonely fourth while Gary Johnson pipped McGuinness on the line to take fifth.

James Storrar and Steve Mercer were seventh and tenth respectively, giving Britain seven top ten finishers but Manx rider Conor Cummins was forced to sit out the race due to illness.

Alastair Seeley won the only race that beat the weather last year - Photo Credit: Suzuki Racing

Coleraine & District Motor Club Ltd have announced that race day for next year’s International North West 200 will take place on Saturday 19th May 2012. The schedule has been ratified by governing body, the Motor Cycling Union of Ireland (MCUI) and the latest running of the historic event will see a number of changes to the programme.

The intention is to stage races on a weeknight for the first time in an effort to avoid the problems face this year, where an oil spillage and torrential rain saw the event cancelled with just one race completed.

Coleraine & District Motor Club have proposed to Coleraine Borough Council that daytime practice is staged on Tuesday 15th May with the first two races taking place on Thursday 17th May but before this is officially confirmed, detailed letters will be delivered to all residents located in and around the course and local people will be invited to respond to NW200 organisers by Tuesday 15th November.

NW200 Technical director Mervyn Whyte MBE outlined the plans for next year’s event with the intention to showcase the new Supertwins class on the opening day of racing.

“We aim to close the 8.9 mile circuit roads on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am until 2.30pm providing substantial time for practice including valuable newcomer sessions.”

“To expand our race programme and broaden the appeal to fans, we hope to introduce two exciting races on the Thursday evening – a Superstock event followed by a Supertwins Race – with roads set to close 5.30pm to 9pm. We believe the new revitalised programme will attract additional spectators and add a little more live action to our Race Week schedule. The addition of the Supertwins race is a first for the North West 200 and we will be following the same regulations as the Isle of Man TT who are also set to introduce a Supertwins class for the first time in 2012.”

White confirmed that the Saturday schedule will remain unchanged with two Superbike races, two Supersport races and the second Superstock race taking place. However, the Superstock class will see a slight change with an aggregate points system now applying across the two races.

Motorcycle Road Racing star Guy Martin will make his debut on four wheels this weekend when makes a guest appearance in the final rounds of the Caterham R300 Championship at Silverstone.

The Lincolnshire man has shown his class on two wheels this year with his sixth victory at the Ulster Grand Prix as well as multiple podiums at the Southern 100 and Isle of Man TT but this weekend will provide a very different challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to it”, he said. “Racing a Caterham Seven must be the closest thing to racing a bike that there is on four wheels and, from what I’ve seen of the races I’ve watched in the past, they’re every bit as frenetic as us bikers, so I should fit in just fine.”

Martin was actually supposed to make his debut in the championship last year only to be sidelined with an injury but with the support of employment and health & safety business support company ELAS, the 29 year old will finally get the chance on Saturday.

The star of ‘The Boat that Guy Built’ will take his place on the grid of 300BHP-per-tonne Caterham Superlight R300s for two 30 minute races on Saturday, scheduled for 11:30am and 3:15pm.

Michael Rutter is the stand-out name on the entry list for this year’s 45th running of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix

Michael Rutter - Photo Credit: Rapid Solicitors-Bathams Ducati

Michael Rutter is the stand-out name on the entry list for this year’s 45th running of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix. The prestigious event has seen a British winner in each of the last 13 years and the chances of another UK success look high judging by the names already confirmed.

Alongside Rutter, 2002 winner John McGuinness will also be in action and with another TT Championship under his belt, the Morecambe man will be intent on adding to his eight podium finishes at Macau.

After finishing on the podium last year, American rider Jeremy Toye will be back alongside Conor Cummins in the Kawasaki Racing Team while Michael Dunlop completes the three-man squad. Michael, along with brother William, will be desperate to follow in some very special footsteps as he looks to join his late father Robert on the list of Macau masters.

Ian Hutchinson is a welcome name on the list of entrants as the Bingley rider makes his return to racing after more than a year out with a broken leg. ‘Hutchy’ will compete for Swan Yamaha while Brigg rider Gary Johnson will race under the IGT Suzuki by TAS banner. Martin Jessopp is also confirmed and will partner Michael Rutter, just as he does in the British Superbike Championship.

The major threat to the British contingent is likely to come from Bruce Anstey, the Kiwi rider took victory in the Supersport class at this year’s TT and will race a 1000cc Honda for Padgetts Motorcycles. Former podium finisher Mark Miller will also be a threat while the home challenge will come from Sou Sio Hong and Joao Fernandes.

They will all be looking to join the list of legendary figures who have tasted victory in this event. Four-time Superbike World Champion Carl Fogarty has a win to his name while TT and BSB legend Steve Hislop has three of them. Former Grand Prix world champion Kevin Schwantz also took victory in 1988 in a decade dominated by Ron Haslam, a six-time winner in his own right.

One sad omission from the entry list is reigning triple champion Stuart Easton. The Scotsman claimed victory in each of the last three Macau GPs but will not be able to defend his title as he recovers from the serious injuries sustained at the North West 200.

Ian Hutchinson returned to a race track for the first time in 12 months, riding a Swan Yamaha R1 at Cadwell Park last week. The 32 year old has been sidelined ever since an accident during a British Supersport race at Silverstone left him with a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in his left leg, and couldn’t contain his excitement before jumping on the bike.

“I was so excited last night, I couldn’t sleep and I was watching the footage from Le Mans at gone midnight. Being on the track felt surprisingly good to be honest. It’s a bit strange but after a couple of laps you’re soon back into it.”

“It wasn’t like I expected to be missing apexes or anything like that and you don’t forget what you’ve spent all that time learning. Obviously, I’m not pushing hard and getting on the throttle early but I’ve got some good lines and really enjoying being back out there.”

The Yamaha R1 incorporated a specially constructed gear-shift system, built by SMR Performance, which allowed the Bingley man to swap cogs with his right leg. Hutchinson didn’t have any problems with it but had the left-mounted rear brake disconnected while he waits for a thumb-brake to be installed.

“We’re using the Superstock bike because it is closer to a roadbike and easier to ride than a full-blown Supersport race bike, you don’t really have to chase it around the track as much. There’s a lot more torque to go a little slower and find my way back into riding really.”

“The gearbox is quite easy actually, it’s still in race-shift and I’ve not got it wrong yet but I did go for the back brake over the mountain but then remembered it isn’t there. I need to get a thumb brake on it as I am used to that on a Superbike, which will stop me thinking about it.”

Hutchinson hopes that another operation will allow him to step up his recovery ahead of November’s Macau Grand Prix.

“My leg feels really good, I’ve got another operation on it later this week to try and release some scar tissue to get my ankle working again. I’m still having physio but it’s looking good for Macau in November. We will swap the gearshift back if the operation is a success but I’m not going to stop racing because I have to use the right side to change gears.”

Swan Yamaha team owner Shaun Muir hopes that the test has signalled the rebirth of Hutchinson’s career and a full-time return to racing next year.

“It’s great for Ian to be able to finally get back on a bike again after all this time. It good for us all to see a way forward now and we can look at 2012 with renewed confidence.”

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Manager at the Isle of Man Government, echoes those sentiments and hopes to see Hutchinson back at the TT after missing this year’s event.

“Everyone on the Isle of Man is delighted for Ian. He has shown incredible strength of character to put himself in a position to be competing again in such a short space of time and we look forward to seeing him back at the TT Races in 2012.”

Ryan Farquhar completed a hat trick of victories at the 2011 Manx Grand Prix Festival with a thrilling win in the Classic Racer Classic Superbike race on Friday. The Northern Irishman had already enjoyed success in the Okells Brewery 500cc Senior Classic and the Motorsport Merchandise 350cc Junior Classic earlier in the week, and edged out Mark Buckley to take his total victories at the MGP to nine.

Michael Dunlop was a threat as well and even led the race at Ramsey, 0.67s ahead of Farquhar with Buckley close behind in third. Unfortunately for Dunlop, his John Sims’ XR69 stopped at the Verendah, dropping him out of contention.

Buckley seized the advantage on lap two after Farquhar lost time over the mountain during the second lap but neither rider could stretch away from the other, meaning Buckley had a slender lead of just 1.7s going into the final lap.

Sadly, mechanical failure would determine the outcome of the race with Buckley forced to stop Kerrowmoar, leaving the path clear for Farquhar to take the victory, just under five minutes ahead of John Barton who enjoyed a close battle with Mick Godfrey, the 997 Kawasaki rider five seconds further back.

Meanwhile, Roy Richardson claimed victory in the Junior Post Classic after a commanding performance on his TZ Yamaha. Chris Palmer came in 42 seconds adrift despite setting the pace in qualifying while Stuart Garton was ten seconds further back in third.

Earlier in the day, 2011 Isle of Man TT Champion John McGuinness lapped the mountain course on the Honda Legends Fireblade, the same machine that powered him to victory in this year’s Dainese Superbike and PokerStars Senior TT.

“There were a lot of people out there including marshals and medics and it made me appreciate how much goes into organising the event”, he added. “It was really special to get the most famous track in the world to myself for half an hour. I just want to go again now.”

“I was getting a lot of pit boards with things like seventeen and P1, which was great. I got my head down in a few places and rode the bike quite hard. I’ve had so many experiences here – both ups and downs – but I love the place. That feeling never goes away. I watched Hutchy (Ian Hutchinson) go round last year and I was really jealous and thought I definitely want to do that so I was delighted to be invited by the organisers.”

Ryan Farquhar completed a crushing victory in Wednesday’s Classic 500cc race to mark his return to the Festival in fine style. The Northern Irishman missed last year’s event due to injury and was desperate to put that behind him, and his long-awaited success was emphatic.

Farquhar on his 1972 Paton pulled out an 11 second lead over Watty Brown by the time the riders reached Glen Helen, with Chris Palmer and Roy Richardson in hot pursuit of the second-placed man.

The lead increased to 40 seconds at the completion of the first lap but this time it was Richardson leading the next group having overtaken Brown at the Bungalow. Richardson’s ’68 Aermacchi Ala D’Oro 476cc hit brake trouble though on lap two which forced him into retirement, allowing Palmer into second after pulling out a 22 second lead over Brown.

Farquhar’s victory was never in doubt and he duly confirmed it after four laps and 86 minutes of racing. Palmer was a minute and a half back in second but Mark Herbertson took third in dramatic fashion after Brown hit problems at Governors and was forced to push his bike home, falling to tenth.

Meanwhile, local racers Dave Moffitt and Billy Smith claimed popular victories in the Manx Grand Prix SuperTwin and Lightweight races respectively. The Douglas riders comfortably took the honours in their respective classes to the delight of the home crowd at the mountain circuit.

Ryan Farquhar claimed his first victory of the 2011 Manx Grand Prix Festival with a commanding performance in the 350cc Motorsport Merchandise race. The Northern Irishman did most of the hard work on the opening lap, pulling out a 15 second lead, and his rivals were simply unable to reel him in.

Roy Richardson led the runners away on his Martin Bullock Racing 349cc Aermacchi as the 400th race in MGP history got underway but by the time he made it to Glen Helen, Chris Palmer, Farquhar and Chris McGahan had all overtaken him on corrected time. Farquhar passed Palmer by Ramsey to lead by 3.91 seconds, which he extended to 24 seconds by the end of lap two.

The unsettled weather conditions were making life tricky and Farquhar was relieved to have a sizeable lead, taking the win by 43 seconds from Palmer. McGahan came unstuck on the damp circuit three laps in and subsequently lost the final podium position to Richardson, with Bill Swallow fourth and David Madsen-Mygdal in fifth.

Ewan Hamilton led the 250cc class in the early stages after the retirement of Peter Symes but a problem firing his bike up in the pits saw him lose the advantage to Barry Davidson.

The RJP Racing rider held off Peter Wakefield for the victory but there was a dramatic finish in the battle for the final podium position. Maria Costello MBE stopped at Governors Dip on the final lap and was forced to push her Suzuki over the final 500m to the finish line, eventually getting there before fourth placed Dave Edwards.

Andrew Brady took victory in the Manngo.im Junior Manx Grand Prix on Monday but the race was overshadowed by the tragic death of Wayne Hamilton after a crash on the approach to Kirk Michael.

The 20 year old was running in third place before an accident at the 13th milestone and the Manx Motorcycle Club later confirmed in a statement that he had succumbed to the injuries. Wayne was single and his next of kin have been informed.

Bill Bennett, Chairman of the Manx Motor Cycle Club, paid tribute to the Portadown racer on another sad day for road racing.

“Wayne was a very promising competitor who had already achieved notable success in his road racing career. He had already set the meeting alight with his excellent performance in Saturday’s Newcomers Race and have no doubt that he would have won many races on the Isle of Man. He is a great loss to the sport and I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his friends and family.”

Grant Wagstaffe led the race early on but was forced to retire with a mechanical problem at Quarterbridge. Paul Smyth inherited the lead but Brady made it past during the pit stop phase, eventually beating the Yamaha rider by seven seconds. Stephen McKnight was half a minute further back in third but the tragic news regarding Hamilton overshadowed their success.

Wayne Hamilton and Gavin Lupton won the two Newcomer races at the Manx Grand Prix Festival on Saturday with similarly dominant rides.

Conditions were perfect for the first day of racing and Hamilton capitalised with a superb start in the Group A race, pulling out an eight second lead by the time he had made it to Glen Helen. David Kennington was the fastest man in qualifying but he had fallen behind Jonathan Woodward.

Despite a problem pulling away from his pitstop. Hamilton maintained his lead, owed partly to the retirement of Woodward at Governor’s Dip. The second-placed man was reported to have crashed but was later discharged from hospital but Paul Wardell sustained a possible Collar Bone injury following an incident at Cruickshanks. William Davison emerged in second once the pit stops were completed and comfortably held off Kennington in the remainder of the race.

In the Newcomers B race, Wayne Axon established an early lead over Lupton and American rider Travis McNerney, but that advantage quickly evaporated with the 20 seconds to 13 despite the Honda man making a stop.

Once the leader had made his stop the race was Lupton’s for the taking, and take it he did. Scott Smyth took over second from Axon who claimed the final place on the podium while Anthony Porter set the fastest lap on his way to fourth.

Racing resumes on Monday with the Motorsport Merchandise 350/25cc Classic GP Race scheduled for 10.15 and the Manngo.im Junior MGP Race at 1.15pm.

Wet weather on the Isle of Man rendered Thursday evening’s qualifying sessions for the Manx Grand Prix almost meaningless as the riders took a cautious approach. Clerk of the Course Phil Taubman warned the riders about lack of adhesion all round the course and with further rain predicted later in the session, Wednesday’s times remained intact.

Grant Wagstaffe and David Lumsden led the modern bikes out at 6:30pm and it was Wagstaffe who clocked the quickest time, lapping at 107.700mph on his first run before improving to 111.003mph on his second. Meanwhile, Wayne Hamilton set the pace in the Supertwins despite this year being his debut in the class, lapping at 100.117mph.

In the classic Superbikes, Michael Dunlop led the way on his Suzuki XR69 with a 104.283mph lap ahead of Mick Godfrey and Mark Buckley whose lap in the dry Wednesday evening session keeps him top of the overall classification.

Paul Coward was the fastest Classic 500cc on the ’71 Nourish Westlake while Chris Palmer was again fastest in the 350cc Classic Class on the 1972 Drixon Honda. Palmer and later topped the Junior Post Classic times too, lapping at 100.580mph on his ’91 Yamaha TZB.

Qualifying continues on Friday night before the Newcomers get the racing underway on Saturday.

2011 Isle of Man TT race winner Michael Dunlop made his return to the mountain circuit with his first appearance of the Manx Grand Prix Festival. The Northern Irishman, who took victory in this year’s Superstock TT, was out on track aboard the classic 1981 Suzuki XR69, finishing the day second quickest behind Mark Buckley.

Dunlop‘s Suzuki machine was the same that took him to victory at last year’s festival but Buckley, running a similar bike, was in a league of his own with a lap of 114.385mph, his fastest of the day, with Dunlop back on 110.655mph.

Fellow TT star Ryan Farquhar was also in action and topped the timesheets among the Classic 500cc runners, clocking 103.498mph on his 1972 Paton while Chris Palmer was the fastest man in the 350/250cc class at 100.097mph, the only man to reach three figures for an average lap speed.

First out on track were the Juniors but caution was advised with a lack of adhesion from Black Dub to Glen Helen, at Ramsey hairpin and at Governors Dip. That didn’t seem to bother Jamie Coward who dominated the session.

The Hebden Bridge rider completed a pair of laps that were both quick enough to top the timesheets. His quickest of all was a 114.971mph with Dan Sayle his nearest challenger on 113.553mph with Michael Sweeney third at 113.320mph.

Meanwhile, Andrew Brady led the way in the Senior class while Wayne Hamilton also had reason to be pleased with his evening’s work after finishing as the quickest newcomer.

Tuesday evening’s qualifying session at the 2011 Manx Grand Prix was brought to a halt after a nasty incident just after Milntown in the North of the Island.

The rider involved was Brian Purdey from Onchan, Isle of Man whose bike was believed to be on fire as a result of the crash. He was later taken by airmed to Nobles Hospital where he was reported to be in a stable condition.

The 350cc/250cc machines were the first to go out this evening with Suzuki pair Tom Jackson and Peter Wakefield leading the way. However the incident involving Purdey cut their session short along with the other Classics, Classic Superbike, Junior Post Classic, Lightweight and Newcomer machines that were out on the course at the time.

With an extended clear-up operation needed following the accident, and the natural light quickly diminishing, Clerk of the Course Phil Taubman took the decision just before 8pm to abandon running for the day.

Before the action was halted, Dean Harrison and Steve Oates were able to take out the four newcomers who hadn’t completed a controlled lap of the mountain course on Monday. Stuart Osborne, Bobby McMullen, Tony Bakker and Walo Bertschinger were all required to complete a guided lap before their first experience of a closed-road qualifying lap. Osborne crashed on Monday evening but successfully completed his controlled lap but Bakker crashed on his speed controlled run, leaving his bike too damaged to continue.

The MGP meeting continues tomorrow with the Senior, Junior, SuperTwin and newcomers A classes in action at 6:20pm, with the Classic, Classic Superbike, Junior Post Classic, Lightweight and Newcomers B going out at 7:10pm.

Saturday’s opening practice session for the 2011 Manx Grand Prix Festival races was cancelled as rain threatened to fall on the Isle of Man. With a couple of hours to go until the session began, conditions were still dry but with rain in the way, clerk of the course Phil Taubman took the decision to call off the day’s running for safety reasons.

“Based on the weather report received from the Met Office we decided to call the session off early to give people plenty of notice and minimise disruption”, he explained. “I want to pay tribute to the Marshals who had committed to man the session and I was keen to let everyone know in plenty of time.”

American rider Chris Sarbora was gearing up for his first flat-out experience of the mountain course before the session was abandoned. Along with Anthony Bakker and Travis McNerney, Sarbora was going to be one of the first from the United States to race modern bikes at the Festival in over ten years, but he will now have to wait until Monday.

“It was a real shame not to get a few laps on the bike but we did at least get out in the morning with Chris Palmer on a coach and he gave us a real insight into racing the course. I’m just raring to go on Monday now”, he added.

Saturday’s practice session, albeit shortened, will now take place on Monday evening with the newcomers leading the session out from 6.20pm in a speed controlled lap followed by Senior, Junior, Supertwins and the final session, the Classic Superbikes, Junior Post Classic and Lightweights.

Keith Amor gave Honda TT Legends something to celebrate on the final day of the Ulster Grand Prix meeting by finishing on the podium in both Superbike races.

In the opener, the Scotsman was embroiled in a race-long battle with Guy Martin but the corrected timing rule meant that Bruce Anstey was declared the winner despite running in the group further back. As a result, Martin took second with Amor third.

There were no questions after the second race as Amor fought off a number of riders including William Dunlop and Cameron Donald, to take second behind Martin. Despite the contentious way in which race one was decided, Amor was happy with the way his day had panned out.

“Race one was great. I led on and off on the road but I knew that if Bruce got a clear run he’d be hard to beat because he was starting from the second wave with nobody in front of him to mess it up. It was always going to be tough but it was really enjoyable. Guy and I were swapping paint and places pretty much every lap. The team did a great job changing the set up for the second race and it was shame that the conditions were iffy. I didn’t have the best tyre on for the job but I hung in there. I was in a battle with William and Cameron, which was enjoyable but Guy got away. It was just one of those days. Big thanks to Honda and Dunlop.”

Teammate John McGuinness had a tough time though as a radiator problem cut short the first race. The issue couldn’t be fixed in time for race two, forcing him to start from the pitlane. McGuinness could only make it up to 17th but still enjoyed the day.

“I was really enjoying the first race – it was ace. I was hanging in there and I was going as fast as the leaders but with a lap or two to go I had to stop. We later found out that it was a hole in the radiator. The team did a mega job repairing it but we were just a few minutes too late to get on the grid. I spoke to the organiser and said shall I just go out at the back of the pack and show the fans that we didn’t come here not to do our job. I actually enjoyed it a bizarre way, just riding round with no pressure – I revved up the crowd a bit and it was good. It’s been a tough week though.”

Sidecar legend Dave Molyneux has announced that he will return to the Isle of Man after a year’s absence for the 2012 TT races. The Douglas-born rider will be looking to add to his record tally of 14 victories in the sidecar class, a record which places him joint third in the overall list alongside Mike Hailwood.

Molyneux will be partnered in the TT races once again by Patrick Farrance, a world champion in his own right, and will be using the same Kawasaki ZX-6R machine that took them to second place on their last TT appearance in 2010.

The pair will also be taking part in a number of meetings to warm up for their return to the prestigious event. They will be involved in the Aintree Motorcycle event on September 17th as well as the two day meeting at Jurby the following weekend.

“I really missed competing at the TT this year”, commented Molyneux. “I had to take a year out and take stock but with the support of Wealth Management Company Bedouin and Rob Brew at CBG Groundworks, I’m able to come back with a proper effort.”

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Manager for the Isle of Man Government, is delighted to see one of the biggest names in sidecar racing return to the TT.

“I’m delighted that Dave is returning to compete and this is a real boost for the sidecar class. We saw some really close racing in the 2011 meeting and adding Dave to the field will only improve that further. 2012 is going to be a big year for the sidecar class at the TT. We have introduced new rules which will reduce costs for competitors so we are hoping for a larger field and close racing.”

Guy Martin made all the right decisions in tricky weather conditions to take victory in the Superbike race at the Ulster Grand Prix meeting. The Relentless Suzuki rider made up for a controversial end to the earlier in the day which robbed him of the win.

Martin crossed the finish line first on the road but a “corrected timing” ruling handed the victory to Bruce Anstey but the Lincolnshire man fought back later in the day, leading every single lap.

“I’m a ‘Happy Camper’ now I’ve got that win. After the first Superbike race, where I was just concentrating on trying to win on the road, I knew what I had to do in the last race and watch my board. It’s not ideal to take the chequered flag and lose; by ‘eck it’s bizarre if I’m honest, but those are the rules. I just couldn’t shake Keith off in the first race and it let Bruce gain time as he had clear track from the front of the second group. The other races were good enough… we weren’t far off in the Superstock race either. No one remembers a loser but everyone remembers the last winner of the year at the Internationals, so a good job all round from the team. Proper order… I’m well happy!”

With second in the Superstock race behind Michael Dunlop, Martin completed another successful road racing meeting which pleased Team Manager Philip Neill.

“For Guy to then produce such a thrilling and dominant display in the final Superbike race is testament to his guts and determination and the victory was justice in our eyes. Both he and Michael Dunlop were also in a class of their own in the Superstock race, and although Guy was visibly-faster through the corners, Michael had a bit of an advantage on the straights – but what a race? It was a difficult day with the weather but the organisers did a good job and I’m sure it will make great viewing on TV.”

John McGuinness has confirmed that he will appear as a guest at this year’s Manx Grand Prix Festival. The ‘Morecambe Missile’, winner of 17 races at the Isle of Man TT, will play host to the guests at the official MGPF VIP Club on the final day of racing, Friday 2nd September.

The 39 year old was victorious in this year’s Superbike and Senior TT races and the Honda Fireblade machine that powered that success will also be on display in the VIP Club throughout the day. Later, McGuinness will also complete a closed road parade lap of the Mountain Course between the Senior Manx Grand Prix and Classic Superbike Races.

“It is a real honour to be invited to do a solo parade lap. I’ve done many as part of anniversary celebrations but it will be extra special to go round the mountain course on my own.”

The TT legend will also be visiting the Manx Grand Prix Festival for the weekend of the 27th and 28th of August when he will be signing autographs and meeting fans at the Grandstand Paddock on the Saturday as well as appearing at the VMCC’s Festival of Jurby on the Sunday. He will be joined over the weekend by Keith Amor, with whom he contests the FIM World Endurance Championship for the Honda TT legends squad.

McGuinness is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to meet and greet the motorcycling supporters that will turn out for the event.

“Things are always very hectic at the TT Races so I’m looking forward to spending some time on the Isle of Man without the pressure of racing. It will be a good chance to meet people and talk to fans.”

Practice and qualifying for the Manx Grand Prix races will get underway on Saturday 20th August. Packages for McGuinness’ VIP appearance are still available priced at £175 plus VAT per guest from Regency Travel, the Official Manx Grand Prix Festival Travel Partner or online at DukeVideo.com.

Former Senior TT winner Graeme Crosby will return to the island for this year’s Manx Grand Prix Festival as part of the newly introduced Corporate Hospitality Programme. The popular Kiwi, winner of the Senior TT in 1980 and the Formula One and Classic Races one year later, will be on the Island throughout race week and will be the main host in the Corporate Hospitality Unit on Monday 29th August, Wednesday 31st August and Friday 2nd September.

During a glittering eight year career, ‘Croz’ won the Daytona 200, the Imola 200 and the Suzuka 8 hours as well as finishing runner-up in the 1982 500cc World Championship. Also a member of the New Zealand Motorcycling Hall of Fame, Crosby is widely regarded as one of the most entertaining speakers and guests will be treated to a wide range of racing and non-racing anecdotes from his new book “Croz – Larrikin Racer.”

A host of TT Legends are lined up to join Crosby at this year’s event including popular local racer Conor Cummins, who battled back from serious injury in 2010 to be on the start-line at this year’s TT. 11-time TT Champion Phillip McCallen, who memorably won four races in a week in 1996, will also be a guest speaker at this year’s Corporate Hospitality along with fellow Irishman Brian Reid, who has five TT victories to his name as well as two world championships.

Along with the racers confirmed to attend, Corporate and VIP ticket holders will also see and hear from many of the leading Manx Grand Prix riders in the hospitality area following each race, including many of the TT Racers competing in the Manx Grand Prix Classic Races.

Practice and qualifying for the Manx Grand Prix races will get underway on Saturday 20th August with 250cc, 350cc and 500cc machines in action. A number of classic classes will provide highlights as well while the Manx National Two Day Trial and Manx Classic Trial Meeting will provide the excitement away from the mountain course.

The Isle of Man Government Department of Economic Development, the commercial rights holders for the TT Races, is inviting expressions of interest from individuals or businesses able to carry out a feasibility study for a potential TT Races World Championship Series.

The department announced the intention to explore the idea earlier this year as they seek to build a platform that will increase the Isle of Man Government’s return on their investment in the TT Races brand through sponsorship, television, licensing and hospitality.

A possible TT World Championship would also generate revenue, earning opportunities for the competitors and teams who take part, and to provide economic and commercial benefits for the venues and other commercial partners who host events. It is also hoped a World Championship would see further economic opportunities develop through the increased exposure.

After tentative discussions, Colin Kniveton, Chief Executive of the Department of Economic development, now wants to accelerate the plans for a World Series.

“Having held preliminary discussions with teams and riders about the event we are now looking to take the proposal to the next stage by seeking expressions of interest from suitable qualified businesses or individuals, with global motorsport experience, to provide the Department with an initial feasibility study which will set out the mechanics of how a TT World Series might operate. We believe that with the growing interest in the TT Races, the World Series has great potential both to generate revenue and also increase the profile of the Isle of Man and the TT Races.”

Interested parties are required to register with Rebecca Williamson, Procurement Services, The Treasury, Government Office, Bucks Road, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 3PU or email rebecca.williamson@gov.im by 5th August 2011.
