Alex Morgan Blog: A Fresh Start

2 Mins read

So the time has come again to start a new season of racing, however this year has been different to most with such a quiet winter period. At times I was thinking I was set for another ‘break’ from racing, something which I experienced between 2008 and 2013.

Despite being concerned about my chances of securing sponsorship for another season’s budget, I was really hopeful that it would work out. Having done two years of Clio racing in the UK plus the Eurocup Clio last year, I really wanted a new challenge and to step up into another category. The aim has been for quite some time now to move into BTCC but another opportunity presented itself in the form of the Seat Leon Eurocup Championship.

On paper the series looked fantastic with the circuits on the calendar and the spec of the car, so I was thrilled to see how good the car felt to drive at my first test in Barcelona in February. It quickly became apparent that this was the series for me to do and with a strong relationship being made at my first test with last year’s championship winning team, Baporo Motorsport, I was delighted to finalise plans last week with them, just eight days before the first race weekend started.

I undoubtedly have a steep learning curve ahead with a new car, tyre, team and circuits to learn all in a very short space of time but being an underdog has always been good fun. I outperformed expectations at my first single seater race in BARC Formula Renault and my first weekend of Clio Cup racing, and won races on both debut occasions.

This will be a much sterner test for sure but as the sole British driver representative for the series, I’m eager to make a strong impression. With the first race meeting this weekend being at Paul Ricard, I’m hopeful of scoring some good points as it’s a circuit I competed at last year in Clios, and that should form a good basis for me to progress from as the season goes on.

By the time the Silverstone race comes (4 – 6 June), I’ll be fully up to speed and will be pushing for a podium finish at my home circuit! Let the fun and games begin!
