Stoner Quickest On 1000cc Honda at Brno

2 Mins read

Casey Stoner set the pace in Monday's official MotoGP test session at Brno as a number of teams racked up the miles on their 1000cc prototype machines. Stoner, winner of yesterday's Czech Grand Prix set a 1:56.168 which was faster than any lap set on an 800cc bike during the weekend.

The factory Yamaha team tested their 1000cc bike for the first time on Monday with Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies finishing second and third respectively. The World Champion clocked 28 laps on the prototype while Spies managed 24 despite the trapped nerve in his neck which continued to cause discomfort.

Dani Pedrosa got his first taste of the 2012 Honda after missing the Jerez test through injury and set a time good enough for fourth after 37 laps. The Spaniard ran two separate 1000cc machines, each with a different set-up as the Repsol Honda squad looked to gather as much information as possible.

Nicky Hayden was fifth overall as the American set his quickest time of the day on the 800. The Ducati rider tried both the GP11 and GP11.1 over the course of the day while teammate Valentino Rossi concentrated solely on the 2012 prototype which he has been racing since Assen. After a busy day which saw him cover the equivalent of over three race distances, Rossi set a time good enough for eighth.

Between the two Desmosedicis were Cal Crutchlow and Toni Elias. The British rookie spent the day trying to adapt his riding style to the YZR-M1 after a difficult run of luck which has seen him spend too much time in the gravel for his liking.

Loris Capirossi and Colin Edwards completed the top ten while the premier class were joined by current Moto2 outfit Marc VDS Racing who are preparing to enter as one of the “claiming rule” teams next year. Mika Kallio continued to shakedown the BMW-powered Suter and finished just under four seconds off the pace in 11th.
