Italian Luca Filippi has joined Dale Coyne Racing for this weekend’s opening race of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season around the streets of St Petersburg, with the team looking to confirm him for the whole year.
The thirty-year-old has raced in eighteen races in the series since 2013, and tested with Coyne at both Sebring and Phoenix in recent weeks, and will pilot the #19 Sonny’s Bar B-Q Honda-engined entry in the season opener alongside American Conor Daly.
“It was nice to test at Sebring last week before starting the season,” said Filippi, who team owner Dale Coyne is hoping to confirm for the whole season.
“It was my first time back on a road course in an Indy car since Sonoma last season. We had a very good test and it was a good way to get ready for St. Petersburg.
“We were mainly focusing on getting a good balance and a good pace. I normally always try to focus on a race pace because if you can be fast and consistent, then you have a better chance for a strong result.”
Filippi raced in all of the road and street circuits for CFH Racing in 2015, taking a best finish of second at Toronto in a 1-2 finish for the team behind team-mate Josef Newgarden.
