Graham Rahal was quickest in night practice ahead of the Firestone 600 at the Texas Motor Speedway as drivers acclimatised themselves to the conditions more akin to those they are likely to experience during Saturday evening’s race.
With cars switched to race set-up after qualifying earlier in the day, Rahal topped the speed charts with a lap of 213.935mph in his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry, with the American set to start the race down in thirteenth.
Josef Newgarden was second fastest for Ed Carpenter Racing, and was the only other driver to get above 213mph, which bodes well as he will start in the fifth position on Saturday evening.
Ryan Hunter-Reay made it three American racers inside the top three, with his speed of 212.981mph allowing the Andretti Autosport driver to finish ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Tony Kanaan, while Jack Hawksworth and Takuma Sato finished fifth and sixth fastest for AJ Foyt Racing.
Marco Andretti was seventh for Andretti Autosport ahead of Sebastien Bourdais of KVSH Racing, while Max Chilton and Scott Dixon completed the top ten, both drivers representing Chip Ganassi Racing.
Pole sitter Carlos Munoz was only twelfth fastest for Andretti Autosport, but that was ahead of all four Team Penske drivers, with Juan Pablo Montoya fourteenth, Helio Castroneves fifteenth, Simon Pagenaud nineteenth and Will Power twenty-first.
Gabby Chaves, who missed qualifying after crashing during the first practice session of the day, managed to get out on track for some much needed running, and ended eighteenth quickest for Dale Coyne Racing.
