Helio Castroneves will start the Iowa Corn 300 from the inside of the second row after missing out on pole position by less than one-tenth of a second, but feels he has the pace in his Team Penske to fight for victory on Sunday.
The Brazilian heaped praise on his Penske team after Simon Pagenaud secured the 500th pole position across all disciplines for the outfit, but felt the Frenchman had the advantage by running just after his team-mates in qualifying at the Iowa Speedway.
Castroneves set the best time before Pagenaud took to the track, and was later eased down to third by Josef Newgarden, but feels the team are in a good position to claim victory during Sunday’s race.
“The Hitachi Chevrolet is really good,” said Castroneves. “We’re talking about a few hundredths of a second and when you have incredible team-mates and we’re all going out right in a row, whoever goes last is probably going to get the best end of it.
“Simon did a good job. The 500th pole for Team Penske. I’m proud to be part of this team. I’m happy for him getting the pole position. Now tomorrow I’m going to go for the race win.”
