Ed Carpenter ended the third day of practice for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 with the fastest time, but the day was heavily affected by high winds which saw many drivers deciding not to take to the track.

Driving for his own Ed Carpenter Racing squad, Carpenter set a best lap of 222.894mph, but only twenty-one cars took to the track, and only fourteen of them set relatively quick times.

Scott Dixon was second fastest for Chip Ganassi Racing with a 222.599mph lap, while JR Hildebrand was the busiest driver on the day, completing fifty-four laps and finishing third quickest with a 220.553mph lap.

Fernando Alonso continued his learning programme with the fourth fastest time for McLaren Honda Andretti, with the Spaniard completing 39 laps, finishing just ahead of AJ Foyt Racing’s Conor Daly and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Max Chilton.

Carlos Muñoz and rookie Zach Veach were seventh and eighth for Foyt, while Charlie Kimball and Jay Howard completed the top ten.

Of the Team Penske quintet, only Josef Newgarden took to the track for pit stop practice, while Dale Coyne Racing, Harding Racing, Juncos Racing and Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport never ventured on to the 2.5-mile oval due to the gusting wind.
