Max Chilton ended the final full day of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the fastest time as drivers worked on their race set-ups and ran in packs for much of the session.
With just one hour of practice to come during Carb Day on Friday, it was important for everyone to get a good feel on how their cars will run on race day, and it was Chilton of Chip Ganassi Racing who ended the day with the fastest lap, the Briton setting a best of 228.592mph.
Ed Jones continued his impressive rookie campaign so far with the second fastest lap of 228.118mph for Dale Coyne Racing, while Scott Dixon, who took pole position in memorable fashion on Sunday evening, was third fastest for Chip Ganassi Racing with a late fast lap of 227.165mph propelling him up the order.
Simon Pagenaud was the leading Team Penske driver in fourth, with the Frenchman also the first of the Chevrolet-powered entries, with Honda so far having dominated the month of May. His team-mate Helio Castroneves finished sixth fastest, with Japanese racer Takuma Sato in between the two Penske drivers in fifth for Andretti Autosport.
Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay was seventh fastest ahead of Dreyer and Reinbold Racing’s Sage Karam, while front row starter Alexander Rossi was ninth for Andretti Herta Autosport ahead of Marco Andretti.
All thirty-three drivers took to the track on Monday, including for the first time this month James Davison, who has been drafted in to replace the injured Sebastien Bourdais at Dale Coyne Racing. The Australian completed 88 laps in a road course car converted to a Superspeedway configuration, setting a best lap of 223.670mph and placing twenty-eighth quickest.
The only issue of note on the day was Oriol Servia suffering an engine failure on his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing machine, but everyone kept their cars out of the wall and worked through their programs, with 2,705 laps being completed in just three and a half hours.
