Former Formula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa believes Carlos Sainz Jr. will suffer at McLaren F1 Team if he was to partner with ‘beast’ Fernando Alonso.

Speculations has surrounded over Sainz future in Formula 1, as Renault Sport Formula One Team are seeking options if they fail to reach an agreement with Red Bull Racing to keep the Spaniard on permanently. Esteban Ocon is currently the leading candidate for the seat at Renault next year.

McLaren could be Sainz new home with him replacing Stoffel Vandoorne and partnering with fellow Spaniard and Sainz’s childhood hero, Alonso.

Vandoorne has struggled to match the pace of his veteran team-mate with rumors surrounding his future away from the Woking based team.

It is unknown what Fernando will do with his future whether he’ll stay on in the sport or move away to pursue the ‘triple crown’ in IndyCar.

Former McLaren, Arrows and Jaguar driver Pedro de le Rosa spoke in an interview with Cadena SER, saying that Sainz partnering with Alonso would not work in the young Spaniard’s favour as he believes being Alonso’s team-mate would be difficult.

“A dream? I think it would be better if they were not together. Being Fernando’s teammate is very difficult, so I prefer that some other driver suffers, not Carlos,” said de la Rosa

“Fernando is an old dog, the best driver in the history of Formula 1. So I would prefer that Carlos accumulate two or three more years of experience in the sport and then face a beast like Fernando.”

Alonso and de la Rosa are friends and once team-mates during the McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari days as de la Rosa was test driver for both teams during Alonso’s stint.

Now, the Spaniard working in broadcasting, says that Alonso is something special and that his comments are not biased in favour of his friend.

“When I say Fernando is the best, people tell me that I am his friend,” added De la Rosa. “But I have worked with some of the best and Fernando has something special.”

With the rumors over Sainz leaving Renault in favour of Ocon, the fourty-seven year old says that the Spaniard has done enough to earn his place in Formula 1.

“If Renault makes the mistake of letting Carlos escape, we must not go crazy because he has earned a place in Formula 1.”

Regarding on the young drivers on the grid, de la Rosa admits that Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team star Charles Leclerc is a ‘jewel’ and hopes that he will get a seat at Ferrari next season.

“He is the new jewel and I hope they give him a chance at Ferrari in 2019.”

With the championship now on pause for the summer break, de le Rosa thinks Ferrari should be leading away against Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport but states that there is a long way to go and hopes it’ll come down to the final race.

“Mercedes is winning when Ferrari should be doing so, the great drama for them and Vettel is that they have the best car but are still 24 points behind.

“There is still a long way to go and I think everything will be decided only at the last race,”
