Carlin Motorsport‘s Sérgio Sette Câmara set the fastest time in practice for FIA Formula 2 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in a wet to dry session.
The Brazilian set a lap late into the session with a 1:33.810 to beat Russian Time‘s Artem Markelov, who ended his session early with a spin and beaching his F2 car on the kerb at the opening chicane.
DAMS‘ Alexander Albon claimed the third fastest time of the session ahead of Russian Time‘s Tadasuke Makino. Italian driver Luca Ghiotto in the Campos Vexatec Racing rounded off the top five at his home race. He joins with fellow countryman Antonio Fuoco with the sixth fastest time.
Championship leader George Russell placed himself in seventh place ahead of Trident‘s Arjun Maini. Lando Norris could only managed ninth overall but had two laps blocked towards the end of the session. MP Motorsport‘s Dorian Boccolacci rounded off the top ten. Spa-Francorchamps‘ feature race winner Nyck de Vries was the only driver not to set a time, after a technical issue hindered his practice session.
The session began with the track conditions drying out from the morning showers. Multiple cars headed out on track on the wet tyre to form a dry line on track. After seven minutes of the session, Tadasuke Makino became the first driver to head out with the dry medium tyres, but only completed an exploration lap.
After twenty minutes of the track drying out, Louis Delétraz became the first driver to set a representative time on the slick tyres with a 1:37.117. Trident’s Arjun Miani followed up in second place by setting a time 0.2 seconds slower than the Charouz Racing System car. Dorian Boccolacci in the MP Motorsport soon topped the session as the drivers headed out on track to start their dry runs. Pertamina Prema Theodore Racing‘s Nyck de Vries suffered a mechanical related issue that saw him engaged into safe mode and went very slowly around the 3.6 mile circuit.
With ten minutes of the session, drivers set their best times as the track started to dry out. Norris almost came into contact with both ART Grand Prix cars at the final corner whilst on a flying lap. He encountered more traffic issues at the Ascari section. Sette Câmara went fastest overall with two minutes remain, pushing Markelov off the top before the Russian beached his car on a kerb at the first chicane.
