Lance Stroll has officially been confirmed at Racing Point Force India F1 Team for the 2019 Formula 1 Season.
The Canadian driver will enter his third season in Formula 1 in a new environment, partnering alongside veteran driver Sergio Pérez at the Silverstone based team.
Stroll spent his first two years in F1 with Williams Martini Racing, where he surprised many with a third place performance at the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He finished twelfth overall in the championship in his first season.
After a challenging second year with Williams, only ending the year down in eighteenth thanks to two points finishes, Stroll will move to Force India on a long-term deal.
His father, Lawrence Stroll brought the team during the summer after Force India fell into administration. The Canadian billionaire set up an consortium of buyers to save the team and start a new era within the Silverstone based team that originated as Jordan Grand Prix in 1991.
Ahead of the announcement, Lance Stroll said that signing with Force India will mark a new beginning of an exciting journey of his F1 career.
“This is the beginning of an incredibly exciting journey in my Formula One career,” said Stroll.
“I look forward to working alongside a successful team with a great culture. It’s a new challenge and I am excited to embrace this new opportunity!”
Force India team principal and CEO, Otmar Szafnauer welcomes Stroll into the team, saying that he sees huge potential in the young Canadian driver.
“I’m pleased that we can finally confirm Lance’s arrival to race alongside Sergio next year,” commented Szafnauer
“It gives us an exciting line-up with the perfect blend of youth, talent, and experience. Lance is only twenty and already has two years of Formula One experience under his belt, as well as a podium finish and a front row start.
“We see huge potential in Lance and believe we can create an environment in which he can flourish.”
Szafnauer also sends his thanks to Esteban Ocon, who drove for the team for the 2018 and 2017 season, but will return to Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport as the teams’ reserve driver.
“Our team has enjoyed great success nurturing and developing young and talented drivers, and we are very excited to begin our journey with Lance. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Esteban Ocon for his contribution to the team over the last two seasons and wish him well for the future.”
With Stroll now confirmed at Force India, all twenty seats in F1 for 2019 have been filled as the teams head into the winter break.
