Aston Martin Red Bull Racing‘s Max Verstappen opened the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend by going fastest in Free Practice 1 ahead of Scuderia Ferrari‘s Sebastian Vettel.
The Dutch driver set a time of 1:09.011 in the first session around the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace. Vettel’s Ferrari was short by 0.049 seconds to go second fastest but he was able to beat Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport‘s Lewis Hamilton.
Daniel Ricciardo will have to take a grid penalty for the race on Sunday for a new turbo charger following on from his retirement at the Mexican Grand Prix, but was fourth fastest in the session ahead of Kimi Räikkönen, who set his first time on the Soft tyres.
Valtteri Bottas ended Free Practice 1 in sixth place ahead of both Haas F1 Team drivers’ of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. Charles Leclerc managed to place the ninth best time of the session, beating Racing Point Force India F1 Team‘s Esteban Ocon who rounded off the top ten.
Three test drivers participated in the first practice session of the weekend. Nicholas Latifi was in the Force India, replacing Sergio Pérez.
Lando Norris and Antonio Giovinazzi were out on track in the McLaren F1 Team and Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team respectfully as they continue their preparation for their full-time seat in F1 next year.
Ricciardo was the first driver to head out on track first, waiting at the exit of the pit lane minutes before the session began.
Räikkönen set the first time of the session with a 1:20.666 as he had the whole track to himself in the opening minutes of FP1.
Norris soon produced the first representative time with a 1:13.312, over seven seconds faster than the Ferrari’s time set within the first fifteen minutes of the session.
Ricciardo soon regained the top spot on the time sheets before Räikkönen set a 1:10.086 to go fastest with an hour of the session left to go. Verstappen jumped ahead of team-mate Ricciardo whilst Vettel set the fourth fastest time ahead of Hamilton.
Bottas’ session was halted as Mercedes checked for a suspected oil leak within the engine. His car was on the stands as the mechanics looked in to issue.
With half an hour left, Hamilton topped the session with a time of 1:09.107, ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, and Ricciardo. Brendon Hartley was forced to take action to dodge a slow Giovinazzi at Turn 5, the New Zealander managed to get onto the run-off to avoid colliding with the Sauber. Hartley’s off-track adventure caused a brief yellow flag in the session.
Bottas returned to the track after the team solved the oil leak issue with fifteen minutes of the session remaining as Verstappen and Vettel surpassed Hamilton’s time. Giovinazzi was the fastest driver out of the test drivers, setting the thirteenth fastest time. Norris gathered laps under his belt and placed himself sixteenth whilst Latifi set the twentieth best time.
Verstappen’s lap time of 1:09:011 was enough for him to stay at the top and end the first practice session fastest ahead of Vettel, Hamilton, Ricciardo and Räikkönen.
