The 2018 United States Grand Prix was voted the best race of the 2018 Formula 1 Season by fans.
Kimi Räikkönen‘s first victory in over five years won the vote set out by Formula 1, winning 30% of the majority vote ahead of second place, the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The race at the Circuit of the Americas saw an action-packed race where title contender Sebastian Vettel made contact with Daniel Ricciardo on the opening lap, sending the German down the field. A dramatic crash between Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso attracted the attention during the opening seconds of the race, but it was the three-way battle for the win in the dying moments of the race between Räikkönen, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton that caught the eyes of fans.
With Räikkönen ahead of Verstappen, Hamilton closed on the pair having switched to a two-stop strategy midway through the race. The resilience defending from Verstappen against Hamilton in the last two laps were breathtaking as the two cars were inches away from each other, as was Hamilton’s chances of wrapping up the drivers’ championship. Hamilton needed second place to clinch the title.
But in the end, Verstappen did enough to keep second place with Hamilton settling for third place. But it was Kimi Räikkönen’s win that broke a drought lasting five years since his last win that got everyone cheering. It was also nine years since his last win in Ferrari colours.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix earned second place in the poll with 13%, a race that saw the two Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s clash into each other, Romain Grosjean crashing under the safety car and Valtteri Bottas‘ heartbreaking puncture whilst leading the race with three laps to go.
Third place with 9% went to the British Grand Prix, a race that saw Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport and Scuderia Ferrari go head-to-head for the race win with a handful of laps to go. Vettel was able to clinch victory in front of Hamilton’s home crowd, but the Brit was able to claim second place after climbing his way through the field after a first lap collision with Räikkönen.
Fourth went to the German Grand Prix, who earned 8% of the public’s vote. A race that shook the championship picture after Vettel crashed out of the race whilst leading the way, handing the win to Hamilton. Fifth place with 6% was the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, where Verstappen took victory on Red Bull’s home soil.
