Enzo Fittipaldi was lucky to only suffer a fractured heal and a facial wound in his horror crash with Théo Pourchaire at the start of the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, while the Frenchman escaped unharmed.
Pourchaire was unable to get his car off the line at the start and Charouz Racing System driver Fittipaldi was unsighted as he charged from near the back of the field and rear-ended the ART Grand Prix machine, with the race being immediately red flagged as a result.
Both drivers remained in their car as marshals and medical staff attended to them, but luckily neither lost consciousness before they were extracted from their cars and taken to hospital.
Fittipaldi revealed the extent of his injuries the day after the event through his social media channels, and he thanked the medical staff to taking care of him when he needed it most.
“Hey guys, I am very grateful that I only broke my heel and have some cuts and bruises,” said Fittipaldi. “Thank you all for the messages, as well as the FIA and medical staff for taking great care of me.
“I am very happy that Theo is ok. I will be back on track soon and faster than ever.”
Pourchaire also took to social media to say he was fine, and he hoped to be back for the final round of the season in Abu Dhabi.
“Hey everyone, Just wanted to tell you that I’m globally fine!,” said Pourchaire. “For the moment I don’t know if it’s already the end of the season for me. But the most important is not that, that was a really big one and Enzo is injured.
“I wish him the best recovery possible!”
