Max Fewtrell admits it is surreal to see his name on the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 series trophy after the British racer secured the title thanks to a very strong and consistent 2018 campaign with R-ace GP.
The Renault Sport Academy star was the only driver to win six races across the season, while he only failed to score points twice, a twenty-second place finish (after contact) at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and a retirement from race two at Silverstone.
However, it was Fewtrell’s consistency that gave him the championship, with fourteen consecutive top-eight finishes between the weekend in Monte Carlo in May up until the final race of the season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya ensuring he finished seventeen-and-a-half points clear of MP Motorsport’s Christian Lundgaard.
“It’s an amazing feeling and it doesn’t feel real when you see your name on the back of the trophy alongside a long list of great names,” said Fewtrell. “It’s pretty cool and it makes all the hard work feel worth it.”
The nineteen-year-old said the aim ahead of his sophomore Eurocup season was to take the title but there were some mid-season doubts when he slipped to fifth in the championship standings, but he maintained belief that he could take the crown.
“Going into the year, the aim was to win it and I expected to lift it,” said Fewtrell. “Midway through the season the goal felt far away especially after falling down to fifth place. We knew we could do it, we just had to stick at it, never give up and in the end, we never looked back.
“We did it and it felt even more rewarding to do it like we did! I doubted myself for 30 seconds and I was angry after the race in Spa. After that, I calmed down. I knew I had the speed, I believed I was the fastest guy out there and I just had to go and do it.”
