Biagi takes double home podium

1 Mins read

Thomas Biagi took a win and a second place at his home race at Imola during the second race weekend of the 2010 Superstars series.

Having qualified fifth in the wet qualifying session, just behind team mate Gianni Morbidelli, Biagi had a storming drive to take the chequered flag first – his first win in the Superstars series in his third race.

With the reversal of the grid for race two, Biagi started down in eighth place and fought his way up the field to be up behind the Mercedes of Max Pigoli. Not finding a way past meant that the former FIA GT racer had to accept second, to back up his first win in the series.

The results from Imola mean that Biagi is now second in the Championship with fifty seven points, three points off the Championship lead.

After the Imola weekend, Biagi was delighted to secure a double podium visit: “I am extremely happy to get my first victory in Superstars Series here at Imola, my home race, right in front of my fans who were numerous as usual. This is the first success of the season for Team BMW Italy and allows me to make an important leap forward in the classification: now I am three points adrift the leader therefore I cannot be but satisfied for such a positive beginning of the season.”

“At the end of the race I managed to attack Pigoli to obtain a double victory that would have been memorable, but Mercedes’ higher top speed on straights made practically impossible any overtaking attempt. The fastest lap of both races crowned a day in which everything went in the best way. A special thanks goes also to the staff of Clinica Mobile of Dr. Costa who, in between the two races, allowed me to resolve a physical problem which could have spoiled my performance in the second race”.

The next rounds of the Superstars series take place at Vallelunga, near Rome on the 8/9 May.
