Porsche Champ Birch Makes Supercup Switch

1 Mins read

Reigning Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB champion James Birch will make the move into Ginetta racing in 2013, joining Century Motorsport to challenge for the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup title.

Former single-seater racer Birch had been looking to graduate to the BTCC-supportinhg Porsche Carrera Cup GB this season, but with a deal unable to be forged in that, the former single-seater racer targeted the Supercup.

Birch, who’s competed in European Formula Vee and Formula Renault BARC in the past, has had a couple of testing opportunities in a G55 over the winter and is confident he can continue his form from 2012 and add another championship to his CV this year.

“Century Motorsport have provided me with a fantastic opportunity in the Ginetta GT Supercup,” said Birch “It’s a challenge I’m really looking forward too, and determined to be competing for wins at the first meeting in Brands Hatch.

“I have been working hard along with the guys to get used to the car, and it’s been an interesting learning curve so far, with the car being another new challenge from my previous racing experience. I feel that after a successful year in Porsches last year though, I can transfer that knowledge into a successful year in Ginettas.”

“I’m delighted to be working with James this year,” added Century Team Principal Nathan Freke. “We have tested him twice and he was extremely fast in conditions that were very tricky. He has a great track record and understands what is required to win a championship – a very valuable asset. We are all looking forward to a very successful season and we want to be fighting for the title from the first round.”

Birch is the first driver to be confirmed by Century for the 2013 Supercup, with the team looking to run a number of cars in the series.
