The first qualifying session for the Indianapolis 500 has been delayed ‘indefinitely’ as a storm struck the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The decision to delay the session was made ten minutes before it’s scheduled start, with cars being sent back to the garages, with the storm hitting three minutes after the qualifying was set to begin.

The 33 drivers will now have to wait to see if and when they will be able to take to the track for their first qualifying attempts, with the scheduled end of qualifying set to be 18:00 local time.

Gabby Chaves had earlier set the pace in a quiet practice session around the Speedway, with only eight drivers taking to the track in the 90-minute session.

The Harding Racing driver was able to set his best time of the week so far at 228.160mph, just ahead of Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing), with those two around 3mph faster than third placed Conor Daly (AJ Foyt Racing).

Carlos Muñoz, Jack Harvey, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Buddy Lazier and Sage Karam were the only other drivers to take to the track, but none of those drivers were able to post any significant times.

Meanwhile, elsewhere at the racetrack, the crews of Spencer Pigot at Juncos Racing and Zach Veach at AJ Foyt Racing continue to work hard in order to get their drivers out for qualifying after both crashed heavily during practice on Friday.
