Will Power secured his third pole position of the season and the 250th for Team Penske in IndyCar after breaking the lap record around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Friday.
The Australian set the pace with a best time of 1:07.7044 during the Fast Six shootout, leading a Penske 1-2-3 ahead of Helio Castroneves and Josef Newgarden as the team’s run of consecutive pole positions continued.
Power was the only driver to dip beneath 68 seconds during the session, with Castroneves next up with a 1:08.1169, just ahead of Newgarden’s 1:08.1622.
Scott Dixon denied Penske a lock-out of the front two rows by setting the fourth fastest time for Chip Ganassi Racing, just ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya, who is making his first appearance of the season for Penske as part of his Indianapolis double, with the veteran Colombian having dropped out of a full time ride at the end of 2016.
Sebastien Bourdais was the final driver to make it through to the Fast Six shootout, with the former Championship leader sixth fastest for Dale Coyne Racing.
Defending champion and current Championship leader Simon Pagenaud was unable to join his Penske team-mates in the Fast Six, but will start seventh, meaning all five Penske entries are inside the top seven on the grid, continuing to confirm themselves as the team to beat in 2017.
Ryan Hunter-Reay was the leading Andretti Autosport driver in eighth ahead of team-mate Alexander Rossi, while the top ten was completed by James Hinchcliffe of Schmidt Peterson Motorsport, who finished just ahead of Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan.
Rookie Ed Jones was just outside the top twelve in the second Dale Coyne Racing machine, and he’ll be joined on the seventh row of the grid by Max Chilton, while Conor Daly and Spencer Pigot form an exciting-looking all-American row eight.
