2. Alex Marquez (Moto3)
Yes folks, there’s another one! With Marc Marquez busy stamping his mark on MotoGP, his younger brother has emerged as a contender in the Moto3 class and now, he has joined his sibling as a Grand Prix winner, in fewer races than Marc as well.
The Japanese Grand Prix was a classic example of a rider going from villain to hero within his own team as Marquez threatened to incur the wrath of Emilio Alzamora and the Estrella Galicia squad. Despite the title aspirations of his teammate Alex Rins, Marquez fought his way past into second behind Maverick Vinales and in his attempts to re-pass his compatriot, Rins lost control of his KTM as well as the championship lead with a crash at the final corner. Now that his teammate was out, Marquez suddenly had to win the race in order to limit the damage to Rins’ title chances and with a dive up the inside of Vinales on the last lap, that was exactly what Marquez did.
With a title decider in Valencia to come, Marquez may yet play a pivotal role in deciding the outcome of this year’s championship, even if it won’t be him that lifts the trophy. But in the years to come, Alex’s time will surely come and the world of Grand Prix racing could be completely dominated by Spain’s fastest siblings.
