Clio Opener Cancelled After First Lap Incident

1 Mins read

The opening round of the 2015 Renault UK Clio Cup has been cancelled following a multi-car incident on the first lap at Brands Hatch.

An accident at Graham Hill Bend involving JamSport pairing Dan Holland and Thomas Grundy, as well as 20Ten Racing’s Mark Howard, led to a lengthy delay as Grundy was removed from his car.

The 17 year old was taken to the circuit’s medical centre, and then to a local hospital for precautionary check-ups.

With the end of the day looming and a Ginetta Junior race still to follow, the decision was made to postpone the race.

A statement from UK Clio Cup championship manager Will Fewkes reads:

“Driver safety and well-being is absolutely paramount and it was very important that Tom was removed from his car in the correct manner after a very unfortunate accident. The medical crew has done an extremely professional job.

“As a precaution Tom has been taken to a nearby hospital for a check-up and we of course wish him well.

“The time required to extricate him has meant we’ve been left with no time to re-start the race over any meaningful distance so we will look to re-schedule it at the earliest opportunity at one of our next events on the calendar.”
