Miki Weckstrom will make his rallycross début this year after signing a deal to race with Olsbergs MSE.
The Fin, who has previously raced in Eurocup Formula Renault and has tested for GP3 teams Tech 1 Racing and Status Grand Prix will race in GRC Lites for OMSE, the team that has won every single GRC Lites championship.
“Marcus Grönholm introduced me to OMSE Team Manager Jussi Pinomäki since I wanted to get into rallycross. I did three races in Sweden during the winter with Jussi’s private Finnish team, Set-Promotion,” Weckstrom told the official Red Bull GRC website. “During the those races, I got to follow OMSE guys working and I surely was impressed by their professional skills and passion for rallycross. After the third race in Sweden, we sealed the deal with Andreas Eriksson.”
Weckstrom joins a long list of Scandinavian drivers to make the move Stateside to compete in Red Bull GRC, despite the fact that Rallycross has a strong presence in Northern-Europe.
“In my opinion, GRC has the best understanding of how to do rallycross events. They understand that fans may not want to travel hundreds of miles to see racing,” he said. “In GRC, we go to where people are. My sponsors and backers believe in this philosophy as well.”
“I have racing experience in karts and European single-seaters. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been in a series full-time, so I’m looking forward to the focus and dedication that comes with chasing a championship,” he added. “I’m also looking forward to traveling across the U.S and seeing new cities.”
