Seb Morris enjoyed a simply tremendous 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship season, the Hillspeed driver dominating the series to take his maiden car racing title. The Checkered Flag spoke briefly to the champion during the series’ final rounds at Silverstone to hear his thoughts on his campaign.
Morris joined the series in 2010 and in his maiden year showed real glimpses of talent, taking one overall podium before going on to win that year’s Winter Series. Morris used that experience this year and proved unstoppable, the 15 year old taking an incredible eleven wins in the twenty race season, finishing off the podium in just four races.
Morris, who wrapped the title up a meeting early, commented: “It was fantastic and it meant there was no pressure coming into the final weekend. I’m really happy for the team, they’ve worked so hard and that’s why they’re the number one team to be in. Sixteen out of twenty podiums is fantastic.”
The Welshman believes his success boils down to a lot of hard work by himself and the team around him: “Number one it’s the preparation and set up that the team and I go through. Lots of testing before the season started helped massively. Number two it’s just having a fantastic car underneath me. Hillspeed do everything so precisely and it really pays off. Number three is having a great driver trainer Matt Shawyer and manager Andy Meyrick, because every little thing on and off track makes a difference and they cover it all.”
All season Morris has been chased down by a group of hard charging rookies, led by Charlie Robertson and George Gamble. The trio have enjoyed some close fights throughout the year, with Morris relishing the battles:“I’ve enjoyed battling with them all, especially Charlie and George. They’re great clean racers and it shows as me and those two haven’t been in the steward’s office once. It’s been really close racing all year and its good a few people have had the chance to win.”
Looking ahead to 2012, Morris is hoping for a switch of disciplines, concluding: “I’m hopefully doing Formula Renault single seaters of some sort next year, either on the TOCA package or the BARC series. We’re going to leave all our options open though, but for now I’m definitely hoping for a career in single seaters.”
