Tonio Liuzzi's debut weekend in the International Superstars Series ended with victory in Race 2 at Monza.

The former F1 racer began the race from sixth on the reverse grid following his heroic Race 1 drive from the back to third place. He had the lead by the end of the opening lap though, getting by fellow Mercedes driver Nico Caldarola.

Fellow ex F1 star Mika Salo took up second position and took the fight to Liuzzi, but the Maserati driver's race ended on the ninth lap when a mechanical failure caused him to spin. Audi driver Gianni Morbidelli inherited second place as the safety car came out, but between the restart and the finish he fell down to fifth place.

Race 1 winner Max Pigoli crossed the line in second place in his Jaguar, 1.15 seconds behind Liuzzi and half a second ahead of the Chevrolet of Francesco Sini. Thomas Biagi took fourth in his BMW, with Morbidelli making it five brands in the top five positions.

Caldarola finished sixth having spun out of second early on after contact from Andrea Larini, who finished one place behind in seventh despite serving a drive-through penalty for the incident. Stefano Gabellini took eighth in the sister BMW to that of Biagi's, with Formula Renault champion Andrea Boffo taking his Mercedes to ninth and Mauro Cesari tenth in his Maserati.

Well said man!! We are all waiting for new races to come and see VAL rock and rollin! What about this new number? Is it 54 bring the same luck of the well known 23? What’s the mistery behind this choice?

  • John Caspian

I guess number 23 was already taken or maybe he wanted a less ‘well known’ number, many famous people wore number 23 already (Micheal Jordan, David Beckham, Antonio Nocerino) he probably wanted a new number just for himself, anyway he looks pretty smart with #54 so long life to the hero of Figazzano!

John! Let me say that you are absolutely right and probably having had so many followers picking up his legendary #23 made him quite piss. probably he screamed out loud: oh madunna incoroneta! as I heard once while on holiday in Cisternino beach with my chick.
and BTW, I was browsing in the hyper specialized peer reviewed web sites, almost like thecheckedredflag and I found the pic I attach just right here.. here’s the pugliese mistery resolved

Hey Luis, thanks for that picture, that’s what Vito used to drive around cerignola with many figacce on board, check this picture, it has been taken in Gorgofreddo (not too far from Locorotondo), VAL#54 is very popular amongst the females over there, they call him ‘U Sceiccu ‘nnamurato’ as the picture clearly explains by itself!
