Romano Fenati remains confident that he will be able to take the fight to the KTM powered runners in the upcoming Moto3 season, despite seeing them dominate the opening two tests of the year. The Italian was thirteenth overall at Jerez on his FTR-Honda, two seconds down on Maverick Vinales, but was happy with what he had underneath him and expects developments at next month’s final test to move him nearer to the front.
“I trained a lot in the wet during the winter break. I’m pretty happy with these tests. We worked hard and tried many things on the bike, which is pretty similar to what we had last year. We are still chasing KTM, but in March we’ll try the new engine and hopefully it’ll be enough to cut the gap.”
San Carlo Team Italia teammate Francesco Bagnaia was 26th at the end of the week but felt very happy with the preparation for his Grand Prix debut in April. The sixteen year old says there is plenty of room for improvement and expects to be on the pace when the racing starts for real.
“Romano was one of the best rookies last season and I hope to follow his steps. I’m happy with the way things are going, we’re working hard and the first results are showing. I love the bike, it allows me to entry corners with a lot of speed. I’m more confident on the FTR and starting to ride it the way I want to. The level is really high but it was to be expected with the best young riders in the world. I can still improve a lot. I’ll be ready when the championship starts.”
