Marc Marquez led a Honda 1-2-3 on Friday afternoon at Aragon, going faster than the current lap record in the process. The championship leader clocked the only sub-1m49 lap of the day to outpace Stefan Bradl and Dani Pedrosa with the in-form Jorge Lorenzo four tenths down in fourth.
Lorenzo will have been particularly disappointed with his pace having finished fastest of all in the morning, pipping Marquez by eight thousandths of a second. The reigning champion immediately improved his own time at the start of FP2 but Marquez was even quicker out of the blocks, setting a 1:49.190 on his first lap before breaking into the 1:48s next time around.
While Lorenzo remained on a 1:49.405, others continued to make steps forward with Pedrosa slotting in behind his teammate on a 1:49.254 but the Spanish domination was broken by Bradl’s LCR Honda five minutes from time. The German closed to within a tenth of Marquez at the top of the timesheet to secure a Honda lockout of the top three places while Alvaro Bautista ensured they accounted for four of the top five by finishing just behind Lorenzo. The Gresini rider set a 1:49.763 but his session ended on foot after a crash at turn eight, sending his Honda RC213V into the wall at the downhill right-hander.
Cal Crutchlow gave reason to suggest Tech 3 will have a stronger weekend by taking sixth ahead of Valentino Rossi while Andrea Dovizioso took the leading Ducati to eighth with Aleix Espargaro and Nicky Hayden rounding out the top ten. As a result, the two Pramac Ducatis of Andrea Iannone and Yonny Hernandez must improve to claim an automatic spot in Q2 after ending the day eleventh and fourteenth, as will Bradley Smith who was only thirteenth on the second Tech 3 Yamaha.
