Gabriele Tarquini scored his second World Touring Car Championship win for Honda in race two at Sonoma.
The Italian veteran sealed the victory in the second corner of the race when he passed pole-sitter Mehdi Bennani‘s BMW, leading the rest of the race and taking the checkered flag 2.4 seconds ahead of the Moroccan.
Norbert Michelisz held off pressure from Yvan Muller to complete the podium in third, with Tiago Montiero finishing on Muller’s tail in the second factory Honda in fifth.
As in race one, Tom Coronel moved forward to finish sixth after starting 12th with the similar BMW of Fredy Barth following him past James Nash and Marc Basseng to take seventh. Stefano D’Aste completed the top ten.
Race one winner Tom Chilton could only finish 11th while Rob Huff came home a lap down after a puncture forced him to pit after starting third.
Tarquini’s win means Muller must wait to wrap up the drivers’ title, with 144 points separating them with three weekends remaining.
