Marquez Leads Smith On Final Day At Valencia

2 Mins read

Marc Marquez closed the final test day 2013 as the quickest rider after outpacing the impressive Bradley Smith on Wednesday at Valencia. The world champion all-but-matched his Saturday pole position time to finish fastest of all but Smith was the big mover, shaving six tenths off his weekend qualifying time to take second on his updated Tech 3 Yamaha.

Marquez and the Repsol Honda squad experimented with different specifications of motorcycle on Tuesday but focused on the 2014 machine today, with the 20 year old setting his quickest time at the very end of the day after 56 laps around the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

Meanwhile, Smith continued to learn about the upgrades fitted to his YZR-M1 yesterday and improved by almost a second overnight to finish P2 ahead of Stefan Bradl and Dani Pedrosa on their respective Hondas. Bradl tested the 2014 RC213V for the first time today but Alvaro Bautista took eight laps to make a mess of his, crashing out after losing the front end of his machine.

Pol Espargaro’s first week as a MotoGP rider ended with another impressive showing, setting the sixth fastest time on his Tech 3 Yamaha, while Andrea Iannone separated him from brother Aleix on Forward Racing’s FTR-Yamaha. Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow completed the top ten for Ducati but Yamaha’s factory riders sat the day out after completing their scheduled programme on Tuesday.
