De Vries, Leclerc Share Practice Honours in Hungary

2 Mins read

Dutch driver Nyck de Vries was fastest in the opening collective test session of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Series on a very wet Hungaroring circuit, while Monegasque Charles Leclerc was fastest in the second session.

A wet track greeted the drivers for the first event after the mid-season break in Hungary, and current championship leader de Vries topped the opening session by over a second. The Koiranen GP driver, who last weekend took the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS crown, was the only driver to set a lap time underneath 2:03s, with his 2:02.576s beating Andrea Pizzitola of Manor MP Motorsport by 1.047s.

Kevin Jorg of Josef Kaufmann Racing was third, a further three tenths of a second further back, with Ignazio d’Agosto fourth for Koiranen GP. Alexander Albon was fifth for KTR ahead of the third Koiranen GP entry of Nick Cassidy, while Fortec Motorsports duo Matt Parry and Jack Aitken were seventh and eighth.

The leading Prema Powerteam machine was that of Brazilian Bruno Bonifacio in ninth, finishing just 0.007s ahead of Dutchman Steijn Schothorst of Manor MP Motorsport.

The second session was slightly faster but was still held on a soaking wet track, and it was Leclerc of Fortec Motorsports that took top spot, with a lap time of 2:00.294s. Bonifacio was second, almost a second adrift, with Aitken and Jorg third and fourth.

ART Junior Team driver Callan O’Keeffe was fifth ahead of Gustav Malja of Josef Kaufmann Racing, with morning pacesetter de Vries down in seventh, with the Dutchman failing to improve on his morning time. Parry, Schothorst and Albon completed the top ten.

Simon Gachet of ART Junior Team, Schothorst, Victor Romanov of Tech 1 Racing and James Allen of ARTA Engineering all caused red flags during the day with various incidents.
