Stuvik on Brink of Title after Monza Stroll

2 Mins read

Sandy Stuvik took a giant step towards the EuroFormula Open title after dominating race one at Monza as closest rival Alex Palou was forced to retire on the opening lap of the race.

It was the RP Motorsport drivers fifth win in a row and ninth of the season, and now sits 69 points ahead in the championship with a maximum 81 points on offer.

Palou’s race was over on the first lap after being tipped into a roll by Yu Kanamaru of Emilio de Villota Motorsport, after the Japanese driver attempted an overtaking manoeuvre on the Campos Racing driver that did not quite work out. The stewards looked at the incident but it was deemed to be just a racing accident but Palou’s championship ambitions took a major hit.

Artur Janosz took advantage of Palou’s opening lap crash to jump into second place in the championship by claiming the runners-up spot on Saturday after a race long duel with Kanamaru, Kevin Giovesi of DAV Racing and Andres Saravia of RP Motorsport. Kanamaru eventually claimed the final spot on the podium ahead of Giovesi, but Saravia’s race ended on the final lap after he spun into the gravel trap.

Campos Racing duo Konstantin Tereschenko and Sean Walkinshaw battled hard to the flag to finish nose-to-tail in fifth and sixth, while Team West-Tec F3 driver Yarin Stern made up for a bad qualifying session to finish seventh ahead of team-mate Nicholas Pohler.

Damiano Fioravanti finished ninth for BVM Racing ahead of Tanart Sathienthirakul of Team West-Tec F3, who recovered into the points after a drive-through penalty for a jump-start. With Giovesi ineligible for points, the final point on offer went to DAV Racing’s Henrique Baptista despite the Brazilian finishing eleventh.
