Italian teenager Leonardo Pulcini continued his impressive development in 2015 by claiming his maiden single seater victory in race one at the Red Bull Ring.
A mistake by pole sitter Vitor Baptista on the opening lap and a drive-through penalty for Yu Kanamaru gave DAV Racing’s Pulcini the lead, and he held on for the victory.
RP Motorsport driver Baptista lost ten places by running wide on the first lap, and later would retire from the race, costing him valuable points in the championship battle, especially with championship leader Konstantin Tereschenko claiming second place for Campos Racing.
Kanamaru was handed a penalty after regaining his grid slot after initially stalling and delaying the start, while the Emilio de Villota Motorsport racer would also fail to see the chequered flag.
A first lap safety car was required when RP Motorsport’s Antoni Ptak collided with the sole Corbetta Competizioni entry of Alexey Chuklin, just after Baptista’s mistake.
Behind Pulcini and Tereschenko came Thai driver Tanart Sathienthirakul of Team West-Tec F3, who like Tereschenko before him, passed Yarin Stern of West-Tec, denying the Israeli driver a podium with just three laps to go.
Diego Menchaca finished fifth for Campos Racing ahead of RP Motorsport duo Igor Walilko and Damiano Fioravanti, while a third Campos Racing entry of Henrique Baptista claimed eighth.
Andres Saravia was ninth for RP Motorsport, while Parth Ghorpade claimed the final point on offer in tenth on his EuroFormula Open debut with DAV Racing.
