Barnicoat dominates wet Nurburgring finale

1 Mins read

Ben Barnicoat took his maiden Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Series victory at the Nurburgring, dominating a race affected heavily by the weather.

The race began behind the safety car after pre-race rain, with Barnicoat leading the train for four laps before the race got started properly, but the Racing Steps Foundation-backed Fortec Motorsports driver was untroubled throughout to win by more than six seconds.

His team-mate Martin Kodric took his maiden series podium in second, withstanding the early pressure of Ukyo Sasahara before dropping the Japanese racer and consolidating his runners-up position.

Anthoine Hubert completed the podium for Tech 1 Racing, holding off championship leader Louis Deletraz of Josef Kaufmann Racing as Sasahara dropped down to seventh by the chequered flag, also falling behind Kevin Jörg and Jack Aitken.

Jake Hughes finished eighth for Koiranen GP ahead of Ignazio D’Agosto of Manor MP Motorsport, while Harrison Scott finished tenth for AVF, denying MSA Formula race winner and wild card entry Daniel Ticktum of Koiranen GP a top ten finish.

Deletraz is under investigation for exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage, but should the result stand, he will extend his championship lead over team-mate Jörg to five points, with Aitken third a further three points behind and Hughes four behind his team-mate in fourth. Hubert remains mathematically in the hunt but is 29 points behind in fifth.
