Lando Norris: “I had to fight really hard to win the first race”

Lando Norris drove superbly at the Red Bull Ring last weekend to secure his fourth victory of the season on Saturday before adding a third place on Sunday to extend his Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Series championship lead.

The highly rated Briton was made to work hard for both results at the Austrian circuit, with Saturday’s race in particular being a great show of both defence and offence as he battled hard with Max Defourny for the victory.

The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver ultimately came out on top but not after the R-ace GP ace made numerous attacks that at first look to have come off only for Norris to retaliate and reclaim his position at the front of the field.

Sunday’s race saw him unable to match the speed out front by Harrison Scott, before Defourny found his way passed, this time without a reply, and Norris was forced to defend his position this time from Dorian Boccolacci until the chequered flag.

“We looked comfortable in practice and qualifying but the pace wasn’t quite there in the races which made things difficult,” said Norris. “I had to fight really hard to win the first race – it was a great battle. I then did well to take third in the last one.

“In the circumstances, I’m pretty satisfied with how I raced and obviously pleased to stay at the top of the standings. Points-wise it was a really good weekend.

“I’ve extended my lead at the top of the Championship and have a pretty good gap to second place. But there’s a long way to go, so I’ve just got to keep working hard and see what happens.”
