Bagnaia Pleasantly Surprised by Maiden Pole

1 Mins read

Francesco Bagnaia was delighted to be celebrating the first Moto3 pole position of his career and Mahindra’s first for three years.

The Italian admitted he wasn’t expecting to be on the front row given some of his struggles in the wet, especially in Brno where he crashed out, but ‘Pecco’ paid tribute to his team for giving him the machinery to challenge at the front today.

“I’m very happy for this result because two weeks ago, it wasn’t possible to think of a pole position here at Silverstone because it wasn’t easy for me to go fast in the wet conditions. We made some changes to the bike and in qualifying, I tried to improve every lap. This pole position is really important because it’s my first pole position in the championship and I’m really happy.”

Bagnaia now has his sights set on a second career victory and although he doesn’t believe it’s possible to have a strategy, the Aspar rider is planning to give his all to break the opposition.

“This year, we had a really good start to the season. In Brno, we had a difficult race but here at Silverstone, we were fast from the first session and I think tomorrow, in dry or wet conditions, we can fight for a good result. In Moto3, it’s difficult to have a strategy because in the first laps, you don’t know what will happen. I want to try to make a gap, I know it’s impossible but I will try!”
