Ferdinand Habsburg secured an important pole position at the Circuito de Jerez as he bids to extend his EuroFormula Open challenge beyond this weekend.
The Drivex School driver has a mammoth task if he wants this battle to continue, and needs to reduce the gap to Leonardo Pulcini to under 54 points after today’s race to do so.
Habsburg secured top spot with a time of 1:35.003, and his pole position moves the Austrian a point closer but the problem for Habsburg is that Campos Racing’s Pulcini joins him on the front row of the grid, and should those positions remain, the Italian would be champion with two races of the season remaining.
Saturday’s race winner Colton Herta will start third on the grid for Carlin, ahead of Teo Martin Motorsport’s wildcard racer Harrison Scott, while another wildcard entry, Vasily Romanov, was fifth for Drivex School. Neither Scott or Romanov are eligible for points this weekend in Spain.
Diego Menchaca took his Campos Racing machine to sixth on the grid ahead of Carlin’s Ameya Vaidyanathan, while Damiano Fioravanti and Tatiana Calderon were 0.007 seconds apart for RP Motorsport in eighth and ninth.
Nikita Zlobin completes the top ten for Teo Martin Motorsport, despite having an earlier lap time deleted due to track limit offences, while Julio Moreno, who ran second after the first runs, dropped to eleventh at the chequered flag.
