Colton Herta took his fourth EuroFormula Open pole position of the season as he usurped the Championship contenders on Saturday morning at the Circuito de Jerez.
The Carlin driver had set the pace in the initial stages of the session with a time of 1:35.593, and improved again in his final run, ultimately taking pole position with a time of 1:35.240.
Herta will be joined on the front row by Italian racer Damiano Fioravanti of RP Motorsport, who was able to get within 0.095 seconds of the pole time, while championship contenders Leonardo Pulcini and Ferdinand Habsburg fill out row two.
Pulcini, who could clinch the title on Saturday should the Campos Racing driver win and Habsburg fails to score, but the duo were just 0.192 seconds apart in qualifying in favour of the championship leader.
Harrison Scott will start fifth in his first EuroFormula Open race after a strong qualifying session from the Briton, with the Teo Martin Motorsport driver being joined on the third row by Diego Menchaca.
Tatiana Calderon was seventh for RP Motorsport ahead of Carlin duo Ameya Vaidyanathan and Keyvan Andres, while BVM Racing’s Ye Hongli completed the top ten.
