Robert Shwartzman took his second victory of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup season at the Hockenheimring, but Lando Norris did enough to clinch the title with a race to spare.
Shwartzman led away from pole position and withstood the near race-long pressure from Max Defourny to add to his victory taken last time out at the Nurburgring, with the Josef Kaufmann Racing driver ending 0.586 seconds clear of the R-ace GP driver at the chequered flag.
Hugo de Sadeleer had moved up to third at the start but lost out to Tech 1 Racing team-mate Sacha Fenestraz for the final step on the podium, with the Swiss racer also falling behind Josef Kaufmann Racing’s Norris, with the fourth place finish enough for him to take the title.
It means Norris has now taken both Formula Renault 2.0 championships available in 2016, with the NEC title adding to the Eurocup title he won last weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
Alex Gill finished sixth for Mark Burdett Motorsport ahead of Bartlomiej Mirecki around eight seconds further back in seventh, with Alexey Korneev, Gabriel Aubry and Aleksandr Vartanyan finishing on the Pole’s tail and completing the top ten ahead of James Allen.
Bruno Baptista suffered a big crash on the final lap when the Fortec Motorsports driver collided with Laurents Horr and hitting the wall, leaving his team with a lot of work to do before the final race of the weekend on Sunday afternoon.
