Alex Peroni was surprised to be as competitive as he was during the Pau weekend of the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship as he secured his maiden victory during Sunday’s final race after a fifth place in race one.

The Fortec Motorsports driver was driving in only his fourth event in Eurocup, and despite pressure from behind from Sacha Fenestraz during Sunday’s race, he was able to withstand that pressure and secure the win, with Peroni knowing that unless he made a mistake it would be hard his rival to pass.

“I had to push very hard on every lap with Sacha just behind me,” said Peroni. “I love driving at Pau, but it’s a very demanding circuit. The guardrails on both sides of the track leave no margin for error, and they keep the heat on the track. It was hot out there!

“I was surprised to be so competitive, considering the leading drivers have raced here before. The wet track on Friday morning didn’t help.

“Qualifying on Saturday was a bit disappointing. There was a chance of getting on the front row, but I broke my front wing on a kerb at the end of the session when everyone was setting their best times.

“In the race I was held up, but it’s nearly impossible to overtake on a street circuit unless the driver ahead makes a mistake. The first 10 placings didn’t change for the whole race!”
