Sacha Fenestraz had an outstanding weekend around the streets of Monaco to put himself firmly into the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship battle.
The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver finished second to Will Palmer in race one on Saturday – the fourth time in 2017 he’s finished in that position – but secured a dominant victory in Sunday’s second race, and Fenestraz hopes this is the first of many wins this season.
“It was a brilliant weekend, it was one of those weekends where everything just came together,” said Fenestraz. “After Pau I said things had started to click and I felt this weekend would continue on from there and it did.
“It was amazing to get the first win of the season – my second here in three starts! The team have been brilliant and now we hope we can keep up this momentum and it will be the first of many.”
Fenestraz had led from pole position on Sunday and had been continually extending his advantage over the chasing pack until a safety car closed the pack up, meaning his final winning margin was just 0.687 seconds over Robert Shwartzman.
“It was amazing to get the first win of the season – my second here in three starts!” admitted Fenestraz. “It was a shame the race ended with the safety car, but we were so fast I always felt in control.
“We’ve changed a few things in my preparations that really seem to be working so I don’t think we’ll be changing again!
“I’m still third in the Championship but I’ve closed the gap now and there’s a long way still to go. We want to keep putting some wins together now for the rest of the season.”
