Nannini back behind the wheel ahead of F3 season

2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship rookie Matteo Nannini has been back in a racing car in a Formula Regional car at the Misano World Circuit in his native Italy.

The 16-year-old will be the youngest competitor in F3 in 2020 when he makes his debut with Jenzer Motorsport at the Red Bull Ring in Austria over the weekend of July 3rd-5th.

Having first stepped back into the cockpit at Mugello a week earlier, Nannini set his fastest time of 1:26:640 at the end of the afternoon session as the team bolted on a fresh set of tyres for a glory run after completing 95 laps throughout the day.

He comes into his first F3 season as perhaps the least experienced racer of single-seaters having won the F4 UAE title in 2019 along with the odd race in Formula Renault Eurocup, Spanish F4 and Formula Regional.

Despite this lack of car racing experience, many think he has the talent to cope with such a large jump up the motorsport ladder, especially after Fernando Alonso signed him to be a part of his karting team in 2015.

I am obviously satisfied. The last week at Mugello I had a different chassis. So I tested many setup solutions, eventually setting the best lap. I also learned a lot of new things, that made the day very fruitful”, Nannini said.

His targets for his rookie F3 season are likely to be subdued as he matures but come the back end of the year and into 2021, he could be giving the very best in F3 a serious headache.
