M2 Competition have been left seeking a whole driver line-up after sixteen-year-old American-Japanese racer Reece Ushijima, their only confirmed driver, left the team prior to the start of the 2020 Formula Renault Eurocup season.
Ushijima was set to race as a rookie in the championship but his departure leaves M2 Competition without any confirmed drivers for the season, which is set to get underway at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza next month.
The teenager is citing the coronavirus pandemic and the travel restrictions in place for his departure from Eurocup, although he hopes to reunite with the M2 Competition outfit in the future. His last participation with the team came in pre-season testing in Valencia back in March just prior to the global outbreak of COVID-19 where he completed eighty-two laps across the two days at the Spanish circuit.
“Due to the current global pandemic, and the subsequent travel restrictions that are put in place, it is with regret to announce that I will not be participating in the Formula Renault Eurocup championship,” said Ushijima.
“I want to thank everyone at M2 Competition for their efforts during the pre-season build up before the lockdown.
“I look forward to working with them again in the very near future and wish them all success for the remainder of 2020 season. More news coming soon.”
