It was far from ideal conditions for FIA Formula 2’s only practice session of the weekend as fine rain led to an awkward session which over half the grid didn’t fancy setting a lap time.
Of those brave enough to face the elements and the neither wet nor dry Hungaroring track, it was HWA’s Guiliano Alesi who was fastest by over a second on the Pirelli wet tyres.
The rain came at the worst possible time as everyone on track at the start of the session had to pit as the slick tyres lost temperature and grip.
Jack Aitken managed to switch his wet tyres on late in the session to go second fastest from Marino Sato who spun at turn one as he left the pitlane when the session began.
Artem Markelov was fourth quickest ahead of Louis Delétraz, Guilherme Samaia, Roy Nissany, Felipe Drugovich and Nobuharu Matsushita as the only nine drivers to get a lap on the board.
Dan Ticktum may have wanted to be out in the tricky conditions and he could’ve been quick too, but he didn’t even make it back to his team in the pits as he spun and stalled the car at the penultimate corner early in the session.
