Beckmann quick again as PREMA keep powder dry

As has been the theme in FIA Formula 3 in 2020, David Beckmann started the weekend as the fastest driver on track, edging out Trident teammate Lirim Zendeli by just 0.010s.

The German has had a great start to his season after a troubling 2019 with ART but he now lies fourth in the championship thanks to a pair of podiums in the Styrian Grand Prix.

Coming in hot behind the Trident duo was Sebastián Fernández who was only 0.039s off Beckmann’s pace with Jake Hughes in fourth who will be glad to see the back of the Red Bull Ring, coming away with just half a point from the opening four races of the year.

The noticeable absentees from the top of the times were PREMA who had some issues with championship leader Oscar Piastri’s car that prohibited the Australian’s running.

Frederik Vesti and Logan Sargeant also didn’t set any representative lap times as the reigning teams’ champions seemed to keep their true pace under wraps ahead of qualifying.

No such tactics for Liam Lawson who ended the session fifth ahead of most recent and youngest ever F3 winner Théo Pourchaire who kept his momentum from Austria rolling.

Positive signs for Carlin Buzz Racing as Cameron Das got into the top ten for the first time this season, he was seventh ahead of Jack Doohan and Richard Verschoor while ART got all three drivers into the top ten with Aleksandr Smolyar sneaking in.

Charouz may be a little worried as their tactic to put the medium tyres on early backfired and left their drivers in the slowest six.

There were also problems for Campos’ Alessio Deledda who ended the session two seconds off the pace of everyone.
