As anti-climaxes go, this was a rather big one as the FIA Formula 3 qualifying session was cancelled due to the amount of water on the surface.
Rain had been steadily falling during Formula 2’s practice session that proceeded F3 qualifying but the heavens truly opened before the session began and the very heavy rain made the Hungaroring circuit undriveable.
The session did get started and ran for roughly four minutes before Lirim Zendeli and Liam Lawson both slid off the track at the same corner as aquaplaning became more frequent and dangerous.
No one had managed to set a lap time before the red flag was flown and race direction decided to not restart the session with the forecast and Formula 1’s second practice to take into consideration.
The grid for Saturday’s first race is still unknown with the potential to reschedule qualifying for the end of Friday or Saturday morning, but they could also use Practice’s lap times which would see David Beckmann on pole alongside Zendeli.
