Luca Ghiotto took his first FIA Formula 2 victory of the season and Hitech GP’s first in the series as he stayed on track while everyone else pitted to beat Callum Ilott by four tenths.
Tyre wear had been the talk of the weekend after the dramatic drop off in the feature race and that led to almost the entire field pitting mid-race for a fresh set.
But Ghiotto gambled and stayed out on destroyed medium tyres and managed to hold off Ilott on the final lap. Had there been just one more corner, Ilott would have beaten him as he followed the Italian over the line.
PREMA’s good weekend was rounded off with another podium for Mick Schumacher and feature race winner Robert Shwartzman fourth to head into the next round with the championship lead.
Nikita Mazepin finished fifth showing more good pace for Hitech as he beat Louis Delétraz, Jehan Daruvala and Guanyu Zhou who took the final point.
Guiliano Alesi was the other car to stay out but he was swallowed up by the chasing pack and finished tenth behind Marcus Armstrong.
